While in the Netherlands and Europe, fascists are on the rise and racist policies against people on the move are being expanded every day, EU’s murderous border agency, Frontex, celebrates its 20 year existence this year. 20 years of Frontex means 20 years of border violence.
Twenty years ago, a new European Union agency was created to coordinate the work of member states' coast and border guards. In two decades, Frontex has become the agency with the largest budget (859 million euros in 2024) and the only EU institution with armed personnel. Its mandate continues to expand geographically and legally, with no real democratic oversight. It is a key actor in the EU’s war on people on the move with its involvement in deportations, the externalisation of EU border control, and an endless amount of equipment, such as ships, helicopters and drones and border guards to deploy.
Frontex enforces a security-driven, xenophobic and anti-immigration approach. When it is not busy covering up illegal actions by European governments to push refugees back from their borders, so called pushbacks, it actively participates in them. Frontex has been repeatedly accused and found guilty of violating fundamental rights. After 20 years, Frontex can boast of being the most dangerous agency for non-European citizens. We count and mourn more than 60,620 deaths as a result of the EU border regime since 1993.
Such an institution has no right to exist. Frontex is an instrument in the hands of right-wing parties multiplying in European countries, with the complicity of the European left.
