On the occasion of 10 years of CommemorAction commemoration on 6 February of deceased and missing migrants on their way to Europe, the documentary 'My Maysoon: The tragedy of a family in the Mediterranean' will be screened at the Dokzaal in Amsterdam.
The Syrian family Karbijha that the documentary is about is living in Amsterdam.

In 2014 verdween de 20-jarige Maysoon Karbijha in de Middellandse Zee. Ze was op weg van Libië naar Europa toen haar boot kapseisde. 24 lichamen werden door de Italiaanse marine uit het water gehaald en sindsdien worden ongeveer 170 mensen vermist. Maysoon is één van hen. Haar filmzuster Batoul Karbijha, die eerder naar Europa vluchtte, is vastbesloten haar te vinden. Van Italië tot Tunesië en Libië wordt ze geconfronteerd met kerkhoven van vermiste migranten en een labyrint van onwetendheid, onverschilligheid en machteloosheid. Door het maken van de film kan Batoul eindelijk haar familie samenbrengen om over hun verlies te praten, nadat ze jarenlang in stilte heeft geweigerd te accepteren dat Maysoon misschien niet meer in leven is.

Hopelijk zal filmmaker Batoul Karbijha aanwezig zijn. De film is hoofdzakelijk in arabisch en ondertiteld in het engels.

My Maysoon: A family’s tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea

Batoul Karbijha makes a film about her missing sister to find out the truth and deal with the pain of her loss.
On August 24, 2014, 20-year-old Maysoon Karbijha disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea. She was on her way from Libya to Europe when her boat capsized.
Of the 712 people on board, 352 were rescued, 24 bodies were taken from the water by the Italian navy, and about 170 people have been missing ever since. Maysoon is among them.
Her filmmaker sister Batoul, who fled to Europe earlier, is determined to find her. Batoul’s search takes her from Italy to Tunisia and Libya. She is confronted with graveyards full of missing migrants and refugees, and a labyrinth of ignorance, indifference and powerlessness. But, by making the film, Batoul can finally bring her family together to talk about their loss after years of silently refusing to accept that Maysoon may no longer be alive.

Hopefully, filmmaker Batoul Karbijha will be present. The film is mainly in Arabic and subtitled in English.

The CommemorAction Day commemorates February 6, 2014
when over 200 migrants attempted to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco by swimming. But while they were approaching the Tarajal beach, the Guardia Civil used riot control, - smoke canisters and rubber bullets -, in order to prevent people from entering the Spanish territory. Fifteen immigrants died on the Spanish side, dozens more disappeared, others died in the Moroccan territory. Members of Afrique-Europe-Interact organized the first commemoration in 2015 (see below), since then the day of action has grown and commemorates dead migrants worldwide.
