We will watch the documentary Black Panther Party: Vanguard of the revolution and have a discussion afterwards. Please feel free to bring your own snacks, and some warm clothes as it can get a bit chilly at Vossiustraat.
In the coming weeks, we want to explore the advantages and disadvantages of organising around shared oppression, how this went in the past and what we can learn from it.
The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution:
is a feature documentary that includes eyewitness accounts from the first members who joined the organization to rank-and-file members in cities like Chicago, Oakland, Los Angeles, and NY.
In the 1960s, change was coming to America, ready or not. A new revolutionary culture was emerging, and those seeking to drastically transform the system believed radical change was not only feasible but imminent. For a short time, the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense put itself at the vanguard of that change. Whether they were right or wrong, good or bad, the group and its leadership remain powerful and enduring figures in our popular imagination.
This Film & discussion is part of a broader conversation we want to have after some misunderstandings arose about the reasoning behind why we (AFGA) exclude cis men from our organisation structure and as more broader defence of autonomous organising around shared oppression.
If you want to write us angry emails about how we are men-hating identitarians, we would appreciate it if you would read our manifesto first.
We are a large group of people that organise around the shared principles expressed in our manifesto, but we don't all have the same opinions on things, that's what keeps things interesting and moving.
We want to address some of the criticism that was put forth, while also learning and exploring the history of autonomous organising around shared oppression.
Feel free to come to any or all events, and if you want to do some reading on this topic, here are some recommendations:
