Sunday was the last day of the Stay Grounded Global Action Weeks, in which a total of 27 actions took place in 11 countries (3 continents) to counter airport expansion and to demand a just transport system! Please share the wrap-up video (clip on Facebook, Twitter) on the Stay Grounded action weeks widely among your networks. Find photos of the actions here.
The new network Stay Grounded has also issued a position paper outlining 13 steps to get to a just transport system and to counter aviation. We have by now 130 signatories, and more than 80 member organisations. Please help spread the position paper in your regions - we want the paper to spark the debate around the issue of aviation and the illusion of green growth. In the long term this can lead to powerful pressure on policy makers, in order to cut the priviledges of the aviation industry.
We will send the position paper together with an introductory letter to the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) on October 26th, just before the start of their next Council meeting. In this meeting they will decide on the criteria for carbon offsets and biofuels - the main pillars of the international climate strategy CORSIA, and hugely dangerous because they don't help fight climate change and push land grabbing. Find more information on the current international policy debates and problems involved in this article and in the study "The Illusion of Green Flying" (GE, EN, FR).
It would be great if you could send letters/ emails to the transport and environmental ministries in your countries and make pressure, so that they file reservations to the ICAO concerning CORSIA before the 1st of December. We don't hope for much, but expect that maybe in some European countries we could have some success... If EU member states don't file concerns, this could lead to the EU stopping existing regulation on aviation emissions, in exchange for CORSIA. Find here the contact details of EU ministers and a new CORSIA briefing by Transport & Environment, and find here some bullet points that can be used for your letter.
