From 3 – 13 August 2018 a climate camp will take place again in Basel. The ideal framework for shared experiencing, learning and developing, to build teams and prepare actions for the Climate Games. On our action days on 10 & 11 August 2018 we want to draw attention to the urgency of a system change. Therefore a mass action of civil disobedience is taking place at the oil port in Basel. Together with independent actions of small groups we will face the fossil industry in a non-violent but determined way [mobilisation video].

Fight for Climate Justice!
The consumption of fossil fuels is further increasing on a global scale and has caused 2016 to be the warmest year since the beginning of systematic measurements. According to experts in 2017 a total of 37 billion tons of carbon dioxide was emitted into the atmosphere by the exploitation of oil, coal and gas. 70% of global energy production is still based on the combustion of these resources.
Not only global warming but also the pollution of air, soil and waters are increasing: Studies have concluded that 9 million people are dying prematurely every year due to diseases connected with environmental pollution. The extinction of ten-thousands of animal- and plant species we have been observing for 150 years is unique in history and with unforeseen consequences.
The decision makers of fossil capitalism have shown a downright ignorant behaviour. Although (the scientificly undisputed) environmental pollution already leads to collapsing crops, drought, extreme temperatures and ecological disasters in many regions of the world, there is no indication of a change in «climate policy» of the ruling class.
By agreeing to the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, Switzerland has made a committment to contribute to limiting global warming to 1.5°. Despite ambitious declarations of intent up to today there is no concept of how the pull-out from fossil energies can be realized until 2050. Instead in the course of negotiations of the new CO2-law the existing protective measures could even be loosened.
Not only because of our high consumption of resources and energy, but also due to the presence of numerous corporations like the commodity giant Glencore or the agroconcern Syngenta, Switzerland bears great responsibility regarding climate change and environmental destruction. The policies of these companies do not only destruct the environment but also lead to bad working- and living conditions for many people, especially in the global south. These same people also have to bear the worst consequences of climate change. To stand up for a radical change in climate policy is therefore a question of international solidarity and climate justice!
What are the Climate Games?
In our opinion we cannot depend on our governments and corporations to stop climate change and environmental destruction. It is important to get active on our own and build a movement that fights for climate justice. The Climate Games Basel are a great opportunity to take steps in this direction!!
From 3 – 13 August 2018 a climate camp will take place again in Basel. For a short period a place of being-together arises. The ideal framework for shared experiencing, learning and developing, to build teams and prepare actions for the Climate Games. Time to discuss together, to listen to lectures and to attend workshops. To make the participation of parents possible, a children‘s programme of crafting, painting and playing will be organized.
Action days on 10 & 11 August 2018!
The oil port plays a vital role around the exploitation of fossil fuels in Switzerland. Through the „Ports of Switzerland“ more than one third of our total demand for mineral oil enters the country. The oil, whose extraction and transportation is accompanied by human rights violations and environmental destruction, is loaded from oiltankers to trains and trucks in Basel. From here it is distributed to the whole of Switzerland.
On our action days on 10 & 11 August 2018 we want to draw attention to the urgency of a system change. Therefore a mass action of civil disobedience is taking place during the action days at the oil port in Basel. Together with independent actions of small groups we will face the fossil industry in a non-violent but determined way.
