For the occasion of International Women’s Day Filmhuis Cavia is showing the classic feminist documentary Be Pretty and Shut Up.
With the surge in popularity of the #MeToo movement, women’s right are finally in the spotlight again. Now that pigs like Weinstein are finally being confronted, it is time to realise how earlier feminists had already pointed out the issues at the center of this scandal. Long before sexism, objectification and sexual intimidation was taken seriously in the film industry French actrice and feminist Delphine Seyrig made the documentary Be Pretty and Shut Up. The film, which was shot in 1976 but released only in 1981, consists of a series of interviews with 24 well-known actrices. Acting legends such as Jane Fonda, Maria Schneider and Ellen Burstyn talk about the problematic roles they are offered, the things that are asked of them and how they are not taken seriously as professionals.
