Info-avond met filmpjes over de Big Potato Swap actie in Wetteren (Be) vorig jaar, het aankomend proces tegen een aantal deelnemers en nieuwe aangekondigde acties. Verdachten zullen vertellen over de Wetteren-actie, hun processtrategie. ASEED zal een kort overzicht geven van de stand van zaken over Genetische Manipulatie in Vlaanderen en Nederland, alsook uitleg geven over een burgerinspectie van Biotech Valley in Gent op 9 mei.

Op 29 mei 2011 hebben honderden activisten in Wetteren, Belgisch Vlaanderen, een veldje met genetisch gemanipuleerde aardappels deels onschadelijk gemaakt. De Belgische Field Liberation Movement (FLM) had de actie lang van tevoren aangekondigd. Ondanks een dubbel hek en tamelijk agressief politieoptreden lukte het om met vereende krachten GGO-aardappels te vervangen door bio-aardappels die op natuurlijke wijze resistent zijn tegen de
meeldauw-ziekte.

Op 8 mei aanstaande begint het proces tegen de "11 van Wetteren" die door het Belgisch parket als verdachten zijn geselecteerd uit de bijna 500 deelnemers. Behalve het wieden van aardappelplanten wordt hen ook 'bendevorming' (criminele vereniging) ten laste gelegd. Het FLM stelt zich op standpunt dat het hier juist om een 'goede daad vereniging' gaat, en nodigt alle sympathisanten uit om zich tot lid van de 'weldadige bende' te verklaren.

Op 9 mei organiseert het FLM een vreedzaam Burgerbezoek aan het Technologiepark in Zwijnaarde - Gent. In deze zogenoemde Biotech valley bevinden zich verschillende biotechbedrijven waaronder Bayer en BASF, alsook het Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie. Het doel is informatie te vergaren, door toespraken van kritische experts, maar ook door storende, prikkende, slimme vragen te stellen aan de aldaar gevestigde instellingen. ASEED zal meedoen met deze actie.

Met de grote aardappelruil in 2011 is het debat in Vlaanderen over GGO's flink aangewakkerd. Niet alleen het gevaar van het telen van GGO's in de openlucht (nota bene naast bijenkorven van een imker), maar ook de positie van de overheid en de Universiteiten van Gent en die van Leuven werden aan de kaak gesteld. Voor de actievoerders is het duidelijk dat deze proefveldje geen enkel wetenschappelijk doel diende, maar alleen een reclame-object was voor BASF en gentech-veredeling in het algemeen. Nu de overheid kiest voor vervolging op grond van bendevorming is het tijd om te laten zien dat wij geen genetisch gemanipuleerde planten willen, niet in het veld en niet op ons bord!

Potato revolt in the 21st century: support the GMO resistance!

Information evening with videos on the Big Potato Swap action in Wetteren (Be) last year, the upcoming trial of 11 participants and upcoming new actions. Defendants will tell you about the action Wetteren, their trial strategy. ASEED will give a brief overview of the situation on Genetic Manipulation in Flanders and the Netherlands, as well as explain a citizen inspection of Biotech Valley in Ghent on May 9.

On May 29, 2011, hundreds of activists partly neutralized a field with genetically engineered potatoes in Wetteren, Flanders. The Belgian Field Liberation Movement (FLM), announced the action long in advance. Despite a double fence and fairly aggressive police action some managed with joined forces to replace GM potatoes with organic ones with a naturally resistant to the mildew disease.

On upcoming May 8, the trial starts against the "11 of Wetteren", suspects selected by the Belgian public prosecutor from the nearly 500 participants in the action. Besides weeding potato plants, they are also accused of 'forming a gang' (criminal association). The FLM expresses the view that it actually concerns a "good deed union", and invites all supporters to declare being a member of the' benevolent gang'.

On 9 May, the FLM organises a peaceful Civil Inspection Visit to the Technology Park Zwijnaarde - Ghent. In these so-called Biotech valley are several biotech companies including Bayer and BASF located, as well as the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB). The goal is to gather information, through speeches by critical experts, but also by asking annoying, stinging, smart questions to the institutions. ASEED will participate in this action.

The great potato swap in 2011 significantly stimulated in Flanders the debate on GMOs. Not only the danger of growing GMOs in the open air (note next to bee hives), but also the position of the government and the Universities of Ghent and Leuven have been questioned. For the activists, it is clear that this field trial had no scientific aim, but served merely as an advertising object for BASF and genetic engineering in general. Now that the government chooses to prosecute on grounds of gang activity, it's time to show that we do not want genetically engineered plants, not in the field and not on our plates!rd!
