This Real World Economics session throws a spotlight on the blind spots of the eurocrisis. Think of politics, shifting geopolitical power and long business cycles. The speaker of this session is Dr. Howard Nicholas (Institute of Social Studies). In 2008, at the very first Real World Economics session, he predicted that the coming crisis ‘would scare the hell out of us'. Now, he argues that we still fail to understand the underlying causes of the crisis.
Politics, shifting geopolitical power and long business cycles are rarely included in mainstream economic analyses of the (euro)crisis. This Real World Economics session throws a spotlight on these blind spots.
Dr. Howard Nicholas is one of the most renowned authorities on Marxist economics at the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague (ISS), and a recipient of the Best Lecturer Award for nine consecutive years. In 2008, at the very first Real World Economics session, he predicted that the coming crisis ‘would scare the hell out of us’. Now, he argues that we still fail to understand the underlying causes of the crisis; the workings of the long business cycle and the shift in economic power to the developing countries.
