Hier kun je discussieren over 2 September Anti-capitalist block during the Canal Pride Leiden.

This year there will be a Canal Pride in Leiden on 2 September. Although we are happy that there is a Pride at all, this Pride is extremely capitalistic.

First of all, participation in the Canal Pride costs a lot of money, making it inaccessible for many queer people to participate, as queer people are disproportionately poor. The fact that the organization does not take this into account is not entirely unexpected since the board consists of municipal officials and hotel owners among others. In this way, the Pride becomes a PR event for companies, instead of the demonstration of self expression and solidarity that it must be.

On top of that, there will be cooperation between the police and the organization of the Pride March, which means that queer people of color and trans people in particular cannot safely participate in the pride. Transphobia, queerphobia and racism are endemic within the police organisation, which makes the presence of police a threat.

Moreover, the organisers call this Pride the first one in Leiden. In this way, the radical Pride March of 2021 and Pink Saturday of 1983 are erased. The 2021 Pride demonstration was organised by grassroots queer organisations and anti-capitalists themselves. In this way, Leiden Pride demolishes the realisation of the power of the Queer Community, which is an important part of Pride.

We don’t want a for-profit party with the police. We want the re-opening of the genderpoli at the LUMC, the closure of which has been silenced since 2017.

That is why we call for an anti-capitalist block during the Canal Pride, to show that there can be an alternative to rainbow capitalism!

We gather at the Catharinabrug in Leiden (10-minute walk from Central Station) on the 2nd of september at 15:15. After that, at 17:00, we will go to the Beestenmarkt. And at 19:00 we will march to the LUMC to demand the re-opening of the genderpoli-clinic.

Beste Vrienden,

Dit jaar is er op 2 september een Canal Pride in Leiden. Hoewel wij blij zijn dat er überhaupt een Pride is, is deze Pride heel erg kapitalistisch ingestoken.

Allereerst kost deelname aan de Canal Pride enorm veel geld, wat het ontoegankelijk maakt voor veel queer mensen om deel te nemen, omdat queer mensen disproportioneel arm zijn. Dat de organisatie hier geen rekening mee houdt, is niet geheel onverwachts, aangezien het bestuur bestaat uit onder andere gemeente-ambtenaren en hoteleigenaren. Zo wordt het vooral een reclame-evenement voor bedrijven in plaats van de demonstratie van zelfexpressie en solidariteit die het moet zijn.

Daarbovenop zal er samenwerking plaatsvinden tussen de politie en de organisatie van de Pride March, waardoor queer mensen van kleur en trans mensen in het bijzonder niet veilig kunnen deelnemen aan de pride. Transfobie, queerfobie en racisme zijn alom vertegenwoordigd in de politieorganisatie, waardoor de aanwezigheid van politie bedreigend is.

Deze Pride wordt door de organisatoren ook nog eens aangekondigd als de eerste Leidse Pride. Hiermee worden de Leiden Pride van 2021 en de Roze Zaterdag van 1983 uitgewist. De Pride 2021 werd georganiseerd door grassroots queer organisaties en antikapitalisten zelf. Zo sloopt Leiden Pride het besef van eigen kracht van de Queer Community, die juist zo belangrijk is voor Pride.

Wij willen geen for-profit feest met de politie. Wij willen de heropening van de genderpoli in het LUMC, waarvan de sluiting in 2017 doodgezwegen is.

Daarom roepen wij op tot een anti-kapitalistisch blok tijdens de Canal Pride, om te laten zien dat er een alternatief is voor regenboog-kapitalisme!

We verzamelen op de Catharinabrug in Leiden (10 minuten lopen van het Centraal station) op 2 september om 15:15. Daarna gaan we om 17:00 uur naar de Beestenmarkt en om 19:00 uur gaan we demonstreren voor het LUMC om de her-opening van de genderpoli-kliniek te eisen.
