Op zaterdag 20 september organiseren wij in Den Haag een demonstratie tegen racisme en voor een solidaire samenleving.

Racisme en intolerantie hebben de afgelopen jaren flink aan terrein gewonnen, zowel in de politiek als op straat. Enkele weken geleden demonstreerde de rechts-extremistische organisatie Pro Patria in de Haagse Schilderswijk. Deze demonstratie was zogenaamd tegen moslimfundamentalisme, maar bleek uiteindelijk gericht tegen alle islamitische buurtbewoners van de Schilderswijk.

Nadat deze demonstratie werd geblokkeerd door buurtbewoners roepen dezelfde extreemrechtse figuren op om 20 september weer te demonstreren in de Schilderswijk. Ditmaal gooit de PVV nog eens olie op het vuur door ook voor deze demonstratie op te roepen.

Maar racisme is niet alleen iets van extreemrechtse groepen of politieke partijen als de PVV. Racisme zit veel dieper in de samenleving, en het is veel wijder verspreid. Nog steeds is Zwarte Piet onderdeel van het ieder jaar terugkerende Sinterklaasfeest. Op de groeiende protesten tegen deze racistische karikatuur van een slaaf wordt afwijzend gereageerd. Dit gaat van het wegwuiven ervan tot reageren met meer racisme, en in sommige gevallen ook nog bedreigingen en geweld. Ook is er nauwelijks aandacht voor het Nederlandse slavernij- en koloniale verleden.

Islamofobie is ook een vorm van racisme die steeds meer opduikt. Hierbij gaat het niet om kritiek op religie, maar om het wegzetten en discrimineren van mensen op basis van hun afkomst. Islamofobie moet in kaart worden gebracht en actief bestreden worden. Islamofobie is een vorm van discriminatie die officieel erkend moet worden, en actief bestreden moet worden, net zoals homofobie en antisemitisme. Moslimhaat is de afgelopen tien jaar steeds verder geïnstitutionaliseerd geraakt.

Vluchtelingen die een beter bestaan zoeken worden tot wel 18 maanden opgesloten in grensgevangenissen en daarna rechteloos op straat gegooid. En bezuinigingsmaatregelen van het kabinet Rutte worden afgeschoven op armen, waarna vervolgens weer een zondebok voor de crisis word aangewezen, namelijk de 'migrant' en de zogenaamde 'buitenlander'. Zo is De Tweede Kamer voornemens om ‘kansarme’ Caribisch-Nederlandse nieuwkomers terug te sturen naar de eilanden.

Voor allerlei problemen in de samenleving en actuele ontwikkelingen in de wereld wordt 'de ander' aangewezen als zondebok. Alle moslims krijgen de schuld van de daden van religieuze extremisten; op de misdaden van Israël wordt soms gereageerd met antisemitische uitspraken waarbij alle joden hiervan de schuld krijgen; critici van racistisch beleid worden weggezet als 'zeurpieten' of extremisten.

We moeten ons daarom duidelijk uitspreken tegen alle vormen van racisme, waaronder islamofobie antisemitisme. Tegen religieus fundamentalisme en de extreemrechtse hetze. Tegen racistisch politiegeweld en etnisch profileren in alle vormen. Tegen racistische en stigmatiserende tradities en tegen de bezuinigingspolitiek van de overheid. Want het ene racisme mag nooit worden bestreden met het andere.

Het is belangrijk dat we ons laten horen voor een solidaire samenleving, een samenleving waar we staan voor verdraagzaamheid. Een krachtig geluid tegen een samenleving die is gebaseerd op angst en uitsluiting. Het kan anders, het moet anders!

20th September 2014 Demonstration The Hague: Together against racism!

On Saturday September 20, we are organizing a demonstration in The Hague against racism and for a society based on solidarity.

Racism and intolerance have gained much ground in the last couple of years, both in the political arena and on the street. Several weeks ago, the extreme right organization Pro Patria demonstrated in the Schilderswijk in The Hague. This demonstration, under the guise of simply being against Islamic fundamentalism, was actually targeted against all of the Muslim residents of the Schilderswijk.

After this demonstration was blocked by residents, the same extreme right organizations called for another demonstration in the Schilderswijk
on September 20. This time, the PVV is also fanning the flames by calling on its supporters to come to the demonstration.

Racism however is not only a tool of extreme right wing groups or political parties such as the PVV. Racism lies much deeper in society, and is spread far and wide. Zwarte Piet (Black Piet) is still a component of the Sinterklaasfeest every year. The growing protest against this racist caricature of a slave has resulted in many negative reactions. These run the gamut from denial to even more racist reactions and in some cases even threats and violence. Furthermore, little attention is given to the Netherlands’ history of colonialism and slavery.

Islamophobia is also a form of racism which has been popping up more often in society. This is not about simply being critical against the
religion, but rather the exclusion of and discrimination against people based on their background. Islamophobia must be documented and
actively fought against. Islamophobia is a form of discrimination that should be officially recognized and fought, just like homophobia
and antisemitism. Muslim-hate has become much more institutionalized in the last ten years.

Refugees in search of a better life can be confined for up to 18 months in border prisons and afterwards are thrown onto the street without any
rights. Austerity policies put in place by the Rutte cabinet overwhelmingly affect the poor, for which a scapegoat is needed, namely the “migrant” and the so called “foreigner”. For example, there was a proposal recently in the Tweede Kamer to send poor and disadvantaged Dutch Caribbean newcomers back to the islands.

For many different problems in society and current developments in the world, “the other” gets pointed out as the scapegoat. All Muslims
get blamed for the actions of religious extremists; likewise the crimes committed by Israel sometimes result in anti-semitic statements in which all Jews get blamed. Those who are critical of racist policy get written off as “whiners” or extremists.

It is for this reason that we must speak out strongly against all forms of racism, including Islamophobia and antisemitism. Against religious fundamentalism and extreme right witch-hunts. Against racist police brutality and all forms ethnic profiling. Against traditions that stigmatize people and against the austerity policies of the government. Because one form of racism should never be fought with another form of racism.

It is important that we raise our voices for a society based on solidarity, a society in which we stand for tolerance. A powerful voice against a society based on fear and discrimination. There is another way and we must find it together!
