I have a problem with this and may withdraw from the event. It doesn't feel really okay. The problem is that an in majority white group, the sweethearts of nationalist Netherlands, is organising this to show some Turkish/immigrant homophobes We do not tolerate homophobia in Our city.
Yes this is clear cut homophobia that happened to Erin Olaf and his friend. But the way we want to show our support is very tricky at the least. Very easy to racially construct the other as (by definition) homophobic and muslim. By virtue of the protesters being a highly educated group of mostly white LGBT people that does not clearly denounce the workings of racism nor shows to clearly be aware of the trappings of nationalist and gay discourse, opposers of public gay behaviour very soon are portrayed or seen as non-Dutch, not belonging to this society. As soon as colour comes in - not mentioned by Erwin, but present due to the fact that usually and indeed now the workers are of migrant background - a nasty extra component gets in.
Iam not accusing the organisers or the attendants of explicit racism But due to lack of consciousness things can turn out that way real easy.
At the moment my only alternative is to get lots of non white non middle class people to participate, so that the racial/ethnic aspect diminishes. Will that be enough? Will we succeed then?
beware how you stage a kiss-in
