ONZE VOORGANGERS

Internationale Vrouwendag heeft een geschiedenis die in het teken staat van solidariteit tussen vrouwen en de strijd voor hun rechten. In de vorige eeuw maakte de dag een belangrijk deel uit van een internationale beweging die zich verbond aan de strijd tegen oorlog, staatsonderdrukking en geweld tegen vrouwen. Arbeidsomstandigheden stonden lang centraal en de beweging omarmde een herwaardering voor het huishoudelijk werk.

Ook nu gaan we weer de straat op om de strijdbaarheid van onze voorgangers te eren. De strijd gevoerd om gelijke lonen en kiesrecht. De harde gevechten voor legale abortussen, seksuele vrijheid, kinderdagverblijven of gewoon om 's nachts veilig over straat te gaan. In Nederland gebruikten feministische collectieven als Dolle Mina, de Bewust Ongehuwde Moeders (BOM), Paarse September, Vrouwen tegen Seksueel Geweld hun lichaam, stem en intellect om seksueel geweld, institutionele discriminatie en patriarchie tegen te gaan. Het persoonlijke is politiek en voor verandering moeten we samen in actie komen, zo leerden we van hen.

FEMINISME TERUGEISEN

Recentelijk liet de wereldwijde #MeToo-beweging zien dat onze problemen nog lang niet voorbij zijn. Geen wonder: onder het kapitalisme neemt de ongelijkheid tussen mannen en vrouwen toe en lang verworven vrouwenrechten staan opeens weer ter discussie. De laatste demonstratie tegen abortus in Utrecht trok duizenden deelnemers*, en vandaag de dag zijn er rechtszaken* nodig om anti-conceptie pillen voor iedereen beschikbaar te maken. Tegelijkertijd zijn er conservatieve en extreemrechtse, fascistische politici zoals Thierry Baudet die feministische kwesties kapen. Het recente ‘treinincident’* liet eens te meer zien hoe Baudet (verzonnen) incidenten van seksuele intimidatie misbruikt om zijn islamofobische agenda te promoten. Feminisme terugeisen, dat is ons antwoord.

KRUISPUNTEN

Hoewel het idee bestaat dat de feministische strijd alleen betrekking heeft op vrouwen, denken wij dat dit een te simplistisch gebruik is van categorieën van vrouwen, feminisme en gender in het algemeen. Feminisme strijdt tegen alle vormen van onderdrukking en discriminatie, zoals seksisme, racisme, homofobie, transfobie, kapitalisme, neo-kolonialisme, imperialisme en meer. Deze vormen van onderdrukking werken samen, beïnvloeden elkaar en kunnen niet van elkaar onderscheiden worden: iemand wordt nooit alleen gediscrimineerd op basis van gender, maar ook op basis van huidskleur, klasse, religie, etc.

Het is te simplistisch om alleen over gender te denken in de vorm van de categorieën van man en vrouw: er zijn veel mensen die zich niet binnen deze hokjes identificeren. Ze worden tegengewerkt door beperkte ideeën over mannelijkheid en vrouwelijkheid, net als dat bij vrouwen en mannen gebeurt. Bovendien worden ze gediscrimineerd op basis van dezelfde normen en ideeën.

We verzetten ons tegen de mensen die vrouwenrechten gebruiken enkel en alleen om het bestaan van anderen te ontzeggen, zoals gebeurde in de transfobe Trouw-column die vorige maand werd gepubliceerd. Het feminisme dat vandaag over de straten van Utrecht zal oprukken, is intersectioneel en antikapitalistisch. Geen stap terug, razend vooruit.

FEMINISME OVERAL

Over de hele wereld doorbreken mensen op Internationale Vrouwendag de stilte over de diverse vormen van onrechtvaardigheid die ons dagelijks leven tekenen. Internationale solidariteit zal ook in Utrecht zegevieren met een oproep tot actie. Het is tijd om feminisme te verspreiden: naar onze regering, instituties, lichamen, relaties, families en thuis. Maar laten we op 7 maart beginnen met de Utrechtse straten. Want elke stad verdient haar eigen mars. Op echte Internationale Vrouwendag, 8 maart, zullen onze sisters in Amsterdam de straat op gaan en zullen we hen daar ontmoeten.

Feminism in Utrecht: No step back, raging forward

Feminists will reclaim the streets of Utrecht. To mark International Women’s Day 2020, we are organising a march through Utrecht on Saturday the 7th of March.

FOREBEARERS

International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in New York in 1908 in commemoration of a successful strike organized by International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. The day became a symbol for women's solidarity and the fight for women's rights. It focused primarily on the labour conditions of women with paid jobs but it also marked the need to re-evaluate domestic labour.

More than a century later, we take the streets again to celebrate the militancy of our predecessors. The struggles waged for equal wages and suffrage. The hard battles fought for legal abortions, sexual freedom, Daycare centers, or just to walk around safely at night. In the Netherlands, feminist collectives like Dolle Mina, de Bewust Ongehuwde Moeders (BOM), Paarse September, Vrouwen tegen Seksueel Geweld used their bodies, voices and intellect to push back on sexual violence, institutional discrimination, and patriarchy more generally. We learned that the personal is political and that it takes collective action to make a change.

RECLAIM FEMINISM

More recently, the #MeToo movement has exposed that our troubles are far from over. No wonder; under capitalism the inequality between men and women is increasing and women’s rights are under attack. The last demonstration against abortion in Utrecht attracted thousands of participants and today it takes court cases to make birth control pills available for everyone. At the same time, conservative and far right, fascist politicians like Thierry Baudet hijack feminist issues. The recent ‘train incident’ showed once more how Baudet abuses (invented) incidents of sexual harassment to pink-wash his islamophobia. Reclaim feminism, that is our answer.

MULTIPTLE INJUSTICES

Feminism is not only about the oppression on the basis of gender alone. Our feminism fights against all forms of oppression and discrimination, like sexism, racism, transphobia, homophobia, capitalism, colonialism, imperialism and more. These oppressions work together, interact, and are inextricable from each other: a person is never only discriminated against based on gender, but also for their skin color, class, and religion.
Thinking gender in only the categories of men and women is too simplistic: there are many LGBTQIAQ* people who do not fit in these categories and do not identify with these norms. They do, however, encounter the same rigid ideas about femininity and masculinity as women and men do, and are often discriminated against in the name of these norms and ideas. We raise our voices against those people who wave the flag of women’s rights only to deny the existence of others, such as in the transphobic Trouw column published last month.

The feminism that will take the streets of Utrecht is intersectional and anti-capitalist.

FEMINISM ALL AROUND

International solidarity triumphs when people around the world break the silence about the multiple injustices experienced in daily life. In Utrecht, we reclaim International Women’ s Day as a call for action. It is time to spread feminism everywhere: in our institutions, governments, bodies, relationships, homes. On the 7th of March, let us start with taking the streets in Utrecht. For every city deserves her own march. On actual International Women’ s Day, the 8th of March, our sisters and companions in Amsterdam will take their streets and we will be there to join them.
