Marching and Laughing: the Rebel Clown Army reaches Egypt!

The Amsterdam Rebel Clowns have been invited to introduce the 'Rebel Clown Army' in Egypt. A week of performances, a presentation and a Basic Rebel Clown Training. Loads of interviews, media attention, problems and challenges. The Red Nose Arabic Spring in Egypt has only begun!
Wednesday, Oct 3rd:
Arrival at Caïro Airport on a warm night. A bus brings the rebel clowns to Giza, but first we see the city of Caïro, the river Nile and other spots we only knew from pictures. Giza is a place south of Caïro, close to the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx. The Amsterdam Rebel Clowns stay in a lively neighbourhood: cafés and shops are open till late. Much poverty, much spirit and many super friendly people!
Thursday, Oct 4th:
The night of the opening of the CIRCAÏRO Festival which invited us. In the night the clowns arrive at Abdin Square. The square is close to government buildings. Maybe one of the reasons it wasn't easy to get permission to have the festival there. It took even till Oct 4th till it was sure the festival should go on. First of all the festival is a circus festival, but has also some political cultural components. In an earlier edition they invited a very political Palestinian group of clowns, this year it's Rebelact. The plan is to be a living connection between the neighbourhood and the festival area. Especially a country like Egypt needs a 'Rebel Clown Army'!
The place to change clothes and to clown make up is a tent on the Abdin Square. But... when people of the festival discovered the clown army jackets a big bomb exploded! "This uniform cannot be shown at the opening of the festival! We might get troubles from security, the festival might get troubles, the relation between Egypt and the Netherlands could get bad, we even cannot tell what consequences it might have!".
What happened was a big surprise, because during the preparations the festival organisation clearly asked to bring the 'Rebel Clown Army' to Egypt and yeahhh... pimped uniforms are part of it!
What to do in this situation? For the time being the clowns who all were wearing uniforms stayed in the tent, internal discussions followed. Public was waiting outside, got the request to adapt from the organisation. In the meantime Egyptian media entered the tent. Making films and pictures of the rebel clowns in army dress! A perfect moment to start marching in the tent and spread our message by the media!
Visits and negotiations in the tent. Several people of the organisation came in the tent and asked to don't wear the uniforms. Police and security should be on the square. But several clowns said we didn't came to Egypt to just be a clown! Finally it looked like we got a permission to have a small round on the Abdin Square in our beautifoool pimped uniforms... But then another person entered the tent and the whole discussion started all over again. The European women didn't introduce herself, but the way she behaved it looks like she was the boss of the festival. She wasn't! After a while one of the clowns asked who she is. An employee of the Dutch Embassy... (probably afraid the performances should damage the Egyptian-Dutch relationship)
Shortly after these talks we got a definitive no. Some of the clowns protested by staying in the tent, others made a short round without army jackets in the backstage area. Again confusion. Some people of the organisation stopped the clowns in their way to the public. Finally the public could be reached. It didn't take long. All clowns returned to the tent. Introducing the 'Rebel Clown Army' in Egypt wasn't easy that night!
Friday, Oct 4th:
Dresssed normally several clowns passed the security check near the Pyramids and Great Sphinx. Afterwards the clowns took their noses and wigs and tried to give the Sphinx his nose back. Even more beautiful: a round red one!
The clowns were an extra tourist attraction: several people wanted to make pictures with them.
Of course the proof the clowns really were in Egypt are the pictures with them, the pyramids and the Sphinx!
Friday was also the first day of the 'Basic Rebel Clown Training'. About 20 / 25 people who live in Egypt joined. Most of them have a theatre or clown backkground. They were highly motivated, participated actively full of energy.
Someone had to translate, but everything went very smoothly, as they understood easily what they had to do. Their response was really enthusiastic.
Like on the Abdin Square also at the training in the cultural centre there were moments with Egypt media, making interviews, pictures, films, etc. A great opportunity to spread the rebellious clown message!
Saturday, Oct 6th:
Already in the afternoon the clowns arrive in Mansoura. The performances in the Shagaret El Dorr Park are in the night. There's was time left for a Nile cruise with a party boat. Also joined by a big group of children from the Egyptian Circus.
Mansoura is a conservative place. In the weeks before the festival started there's a campaign to stop the festival entering Mansoura. But luckily the campaign isn't successful. Hundreds of people are in the park. Now the clowns are better prepared to don't wear uniforms; instead they use green self made 'camouflage' shirts. Then all kind of manoeuvres followed. The public and especially the children are very enthusiastic. They follow the rebel clowns wherever they go. Even in the dress up tent where they ended the performance with giving a lot of red noses to the children.
Sunday, Oct 7th:
After an afternoon seeing the oldest parts of Caïro the rebel clowns have a presentation in the evening in the theatre space of the cultural centre where also the training has been organised. Two female rebel clowns explain about the history of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army and how in several countries gaggles (local groups of rebel clowns) started. Several videos from Scotland (G8 2005) and the Netherlands (Rebelact, 2007 - 2012) were shown on the screen. Again Egyptian and Arabic media are there.
The night ends around 22.00 with several questions by the public. One of the most interesting questions is: "How to translate the 'Rebel Clown' concept (and other forms of creative activism) into the Egyptian circumstances?". A question which probably only could be answered by Egyptian people.
Monday, Oct 8th:
The last day of the Basic Rebel Clown Training in Caïro. After hours of physical exercises where the participants learn spontaneous play and typical 'Rebel Clown Army' manoeuvres and much more, the training ends with a brainstorm about what to do with rebel clowning in the Egypt circumstances. Although the original plan was to have practice on the streets, this exchange of thoughts was maybe one of the best moments of the training. The picture was great: very concrete problems asking for very concrete rebel clown attention!
It was a moment we didn't allow the media to film in the space. Earlier again interviews. This time independent filmmakers, but also Al Arabiya - a well known Arabic TV station.
The Basic Training will most probably get a follow up in November. Wait and see! Rebellious red noses will conquer the streets of Caïro soon!
Tuesday, Oct 9th:
Tired but satisfied the Amsterdam Rebel Clowns fly back to Amsterdam. In their bags the contact info of great Egyptian people who invited them to come back.
Rebel clowning started as part of the Alterglobalist movement around summits like G8. Here the Amsterdam Rebel Clowns had the unique chance to really connect with the 'South'. Egypt after the revolution of 2011 is one of the most interesting parts of the southern countries. By connecting with people there the rebel clowns could bring some of their alterglobalist ideals into practice.
Let's end with a personal quote from one of the rebel clowns: "People show high enthusiasm. It was like they see us coming from out of space. We got a lot of attention, much more than you can ever dream of in the Netherlands. People are very reactive, because their life there is quite different. They struggle a lot to survive and are much more social".
It was absolutely great to be in Egypt! It opened our eyes, ears and hearts for real people with real problems. People thanked us for the inspiration. But we were inspired by what happened starting January 25th in 2011. People who were so courageous! We talked with one of the people who joined the Arabic Spring; last year he was on Tahrir Square and showed us his mortar scar, fired by the army.
He's one of the courageous people wearing such a medal of honour.

Marcheren en Lachen: de Rebel Clown Army bereikt Egypte!
De Amsterdamse Rebel Clowns waren gevraagd om de 'Rebel Clown Army' te introduceren in Egypte. Een week van optredens, een presentatie en een Basic Rebel Clown Training. Heel veel interviews, media aandacht, problemen en uitdagingen. De Rode Neuzen Arabische Lente in Egypte is nog maar net begonnen!
Woensdag, 3 okt:
Aankomst op de luchthaven van Caïro op een warme avond. Een bus brengt de rebel clowns naar Giza, maar eerst zien we het centrum van Caïro, de rivier de Nijl en endere plekken die we alleen van de beelden kennen. Giza is een stad ten zuiden van Caïro, dichtbij de Piramides en de Grote Sphinx. De Amsterdamse Rebel Clowns verblijven in een levendige buurt: de cafés en winkels zijn tot laat open. Veel armoede, veel spirit en veel supervriendelijke mensen!
Donderdag 4 okt:
De avond van de opening van het CIRCAÏRO Festival, dat ons had uitgenodigd. De clowns komen 's avonds aan op het Abdinplein. Het plein is dichtbij regeringsgebouwen. Mogelijk is dat een van de redenen dat het niet eenvoudig was om toestemming te krijgen om het festival daar te houden. Het duurde zelfs tot 4 oktober totdat het zeker was dat het festival door zou kunnen gaan. In de eerste plaats is het festival een circusfestival, maar het heeft ook wat poltiek culturele onderdelen. In een eerdere editie nodigden ze een heel politieke groep van Palestijnse clowns uit; dit jaar is het Rebelact. Het plan is om een levende verbinding te zijn tussen de buurt en het gebied van het festival. Met name een land als Egypte heeft een 'Rebel Clown army' nodig!
De plek om om te kleden en te schminken is een tent op het Abdinplein. Maar... wanneer de mensen van het festival de clown army kleding ontdekken, ontploft er een grote bom! "Dit uniform kan niet gezien worden bij de opening van het festival! We kunnen problemen krijgen met de security, het festival kan in de problemen raken, de relatie tussen Egypte en Nederland kan verslechteren, we kunnen niet overzien wat de gevolgen zouden kunnen zijn!".
Wat er gebeurde, was een grote verrassing, omdat tijdens de voorbereidingen de organisatie van het festival duidelijk gevraagd had om de 'Rebel Clown Army' naar Egypte te brengen en ja... gepimpte uniformen horen daarbij!
Wat moesten we doen in deze situatie? Voorlopig bleven de clowns die allemaal uniformen droegen in de tent; interne discussie volgde. Het publiek wachtte buiten, de organisatie vroeg om ons aan te passen. Ondertussen kwamen Egyptische media de tent binnen. Ze maakten films en foto's van de rebel clowns in militaire kleding! Een perfect moment om te beginnen met marcheren in de tent en om onze boodschap te verspreiden via de media!
Bezoekjes en onderhandelingen in de tent volgen. Allerlei mensen van de organisatie komen in de tent en vragen om geen uniformen te dragen. Er zou politie en security zijn op het plein. Maar verschillende clowns reageren dat ze niet naar Egypte zijn gekomen om alleen maar 'n (gewone) clown te zijn! Uiteindelijk lijkt het erop dat we toestemming krijgen om een klein rondje in onze prachtige gepimpte uniformen te maken... Maar dan komt er een ander persoon de tent binnen en de hele discussie begint opnieuw. De Europese vrouw stelt zichzelf niet voor, maar de manier waarop ze zich gedraagt suggereert dat ze de baas is van het festival. Maar dat was ze niet! Na een tijdje vraagt een van de clowns wie ze is. Een medewerkster van de Nederlandse Ambassade... (waarschijnlijk bang dat de optredens de Egyptrisch-Nederlandse betrekkingen zouden schaden)
Kort na dit gesprek krijgen we een definitief nee. Sommigen van de clowns protesteren door in de tent te blijven, anderen maken een kort rondje zonder army jasjes in het backstage gebied. Opnieuw is er verwarring. Sommige mensen van de organisatie stoppen de clowns die op weg zijn naar het publiek. Uiteindelijk kan het publiek toch bereikt worden. Het duurt niet lang. Alle clowns keren terug naar de tent. Het introduceren van de 'Rebel clown army' in Egypte was niet makkelijk die avond!
Vrijdag, 4 okt:
Verschillende clowns die normaal gekleed zijn, passeren de security check bij de Piramides en Sphinx. Daarna doen de clowns hun neuzen en pruiken op en proberen ze de Sphinx zijn neus terug te geven. Een die zelfs nog mooier is: een ronde rode neus!
De clowns zijn even een extra touristische attractie: veel mensen willen er foto's mee maken.
Natuurlijk zijn de foto's met de piramides en de Sphinx ook het bewijs dat de clowns ècht in Egypte zijn geweest!
Vrijdag was ook de eerste dag van de 'Basic Rebel Clown Training'. Ongeveer 20 tot 25 mensen die in Egypte leven deden mee.
De meesten hebben een theater of clown achtergrond. Ze zijn heel erg gemotiveerd en doen met volle energie actief mee.
Net als op het Abdinplein zijn er in het culturele centrum waar de training wordt gehouden momenten met Egyptische media die interviews, foto's en films maken, enz. Een fantastische mogelijkheid om de rebels clown boodschap te verspreiden!
Zaterdag, 6 okt:
Al in de middag komen de clowns aan in Mansoura. De optredens in het Shagaret El Dorr Park zijn 's avonds. Er is tijd over om een Nijlcruise te maken met een partyboat. Een grote groep kinderen van het Egyptische Circus gaan ook mee.
Mansoura is een conservatieve stad. In de weken voorafgaand aan het festival is er een campagne gestart om te voorkomen dat het festival in Mansoura komt. Maar gelukkig is de campagne niet succesvol. Honderden mensen zijn in het park. Nu zijn de clowns beter voorbereid om geen uniformen te dragen; in plaats daarvan gebruiken ze groene, zelfgemaakte 'camouflage' shirts. Dan volgen er allerlei manoeuvres. Het publiek en vooral de kinderen zijn erg enthousiast. Ze volgen de rebel clowns waar ze ook gaan. Tot zelfs in de omkleedtent, waar ze het optreden beëindigen met het uitdelen aan de kinderen van veel rode neuzen.
Zondag, 7 okt:
Na een middag waarbij de oudste delen van Caïro bekeken zijn, hebben de rebel clowns 's avonds een presentatie in de theaterruimte van het culturele centrum waar ook de training wordt georganiseerd. Twee vrouwelijke rebel clowns vertellen over de geschiedenis van de Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown army en hoe in allerlei landen 'gaggles' (lokale groepen van rebel clowns) zijn begonnen. Verschillende videos uit Schotland (G8 2005) en Nederland (Rebelact, 2007 - 2012) worden vertoond op het scherm. Opnieuw zijn Egyptische en Arabische media erbij.
De avond eindigt rond 22.00 uur met diverse vragen van de belangstellenden. Een van de meest interessante vragen is: "Hoe kan het 'Rebel Clown' concept (en andere vormen van creatief activisme) vertaald worden naar de Egyptische omstandigheden?". Een vraag die waarschijnlijk alleen door Egyptische mensen kan worden beantwoord.
Maandag 8 okt:
De laatste dag van de Basic Rebel Clown training in Caïro. Na uren met lichamelijke oefeningen waar de deelnemers improvisatiespel leren enm typische 'Rebel Clown Army' technieken en nog veel meer, eindigt de training met een brainstorm over de vraag "wat te doen" met rebel clowning binnen de Egyptische omstandigheden. Hoewel het oorspronkelijke plan was om iets in praktijk te brengen op straat, was deze uitwisseling van ideeën misschien wel een van de beste momenten van de training. De uitkomst was geweldig: heel concrete problemen die om heel concrete rebel clown aandacht vragen!
Het was een moment waarbij we geen media toelieten in de ruimte. Eerder zijn er opnieuw interviews. Deze keer onafhankelijke filmmakers, maar ook Al Arabiya - een bekend Arabisch TV-station.
De Basic Rebel Clown Training krijgt waarschijnlijk een vervolg in november. Nog even afwachten dus! Rebelse rode neuzen gaan binnenkort de straten van Caïro veroveren!
Dinsdag, 9 okt:
Moe, maar tevreden vliegen de Amsterdamse Rebel Clowns terug naar Amsterdam. In hun tassen de contact info van fantastische Egyptische mensen die hen hebben uitgenodigd om terug te komen.
Rebel clowning startte als deel van de Andersglobalistische beweging rond bijeenkomsten zoals de G8. Hier hadden de Amsterdamse Rebel Clowns de unieke kans om echt verbinding te maken met het 'Zuiden'. Egypte na de revolutie van 2011 is een van de meest interessante delen van de zuidelijke landen. Door daar verbinding te maken met mensen kunnen de rebel clowns iets van hun anndersglobalistische idealen in de praktijk brengen.
Laten we met een persoonlijk citaat eindigen van een van de rebel clowns: "De mensen laten een enorm enthousiasme zien. Het leek er soms op of ze ons zagen alsof we uit de ruimte waren gekomen. We kregen veel aandacht, veel meer dan waarvan je ooit in Nederland zou kunnen dromen. De mensen reageren heel actief, omdat hun leven nogal verschillend is. Ze strijden hard om te overleven en zijn veel socialer".
Het was fantastisch om in Egypte te zijn! Het opende onze ogen, oren en harten voor echte mensen met echte problemen. Mensen bedankten ons voor de inspiratie. Maar wij waren geinspireerd door wat er gebeurde en begon op 25 januari 2011. Mensen die zo moedig waren! We spraken met een van de mensen die meededen aan de Arabische Lente; vorig jaar was hij op het Tahrirplein en hij liet het litteken van een mortier zien, een mortier afgevuurd door het leger.
Hij is een van de moedige mensen die zo'n soort eremedaille draagt.
Laten we contact houden met hem en vele anderen!
