The 28-year-old Jean-Pierre Nzeyimana is a refugee from Burundi in Western Africa, who came to Sweden in 2007. Today he is being forcefully deported back to Burundi, where he awaits execution.

Jean-Pierre is a so-called political refugee. In Burundi, he was subjected to threats and persecution by his own government (which is ruled by former rebels from the Burundian Civil War). The regime also targeted Jean-Pierre's family and amongst other things, burnt down their house. Jean-Pierre's request for asylum in Sweden was turned down because he allegedly didn't have enough evidence to gain refugee status. Although he finally managed to get the evidence needed, his case was not taken up by the Swedish Migration Board again.

When he arrives to Bujumbura, Burundi, Jean-Pierre will probably not have the chance to see his parents and younger siblings again. He will most likely be transported directly from the airport, to jail, to his death.

Its is possible to call KLM Customer Service and - for example - threaten to never again fly with them if they carry through with this deportation. Here's the number: KLM Customer Service + 31 (0)20 5459780

Possible flyer to spread at the airport to passengers of the same airplane:

We've explained the situation. Now we appeal to you, Jean-Pierre's fellow passengers, for help. Talk to each other. The only thing you need to do is stand up together and tell the crew that you refuse to sit down until Jean-Pierre is taken off the plane. The plane cannot take off if people are standing up inside. You risk nothing more than perhaps a 30 minute delay, and in return you can save a life. Note: This tactic has worked before in similar cases!

Be courageous. Do not sit down in the plane. Stand up. Stand up for human rights and human life.

Want to do even more? Talk to the pilots, flight crew and your fellow passengers about Jean-Pierre. Also call KLM Customer Service and - for example - threaten to never again fly with them if they carry through with this deportation.

PRESS RELEASE IN ENGLISH:

The deportation to Burundi stopped by activists

Yesterday, Tuesday 26th of June, asylum right activists from Sweden and the Netherlands stopped the planned forced deportation of 28-year-old Jean-Pierre Nzeyimana to the home country Burundi. It was the airline KLM, which acted at the last minute and decided that Jean-Pierre would not be a passenger on board.

- Nzeyimana would have been sent to a certain death. The Burundian government is after him, and he would probably be transported from the airport directly to prison and to death, says Lisa Atterskog who have been involved in the case days before the planned deportation.

Jean-Pierre Nzeyimana came to Sweden in 2007 and applied for asylum because of persecution, threats and repression from his own government in Burundi because of his dissident views. His asylum application was denied due to so-called "insufficient evidence".

- Although he has managed to bring the required evidence, the Immigration Service has refused to take up his case again, says Lisa Atterskog. But with the deportation stopped, there may be new hope for Jean-Pierre.

The ruling party CNDD-FDD is made up of former rebels who took part in Burundi's 12-year civil war. The country counts officially as a democratic republic, but is criticized by Human Rights Watch, which has given reports on torture, journalists jailed and oppostional voices silenced.

Mass deportations from Sweden to Burundi took place in 2009 and was met by demonstrations around the country and condemnation of, among others, several well-known Swedish politicians.

Nzeyimanas cases was brought to attention by a flash appeal on Facebook, and the mobilization became international. For several days angry and disappointed people called and emailed the airline KLM, and the result was that the airline refused to carry out the deportation.

Nzeyimana is still in the refugee detention centre in Märsta and an uncertain future awaits.
