We members of Fast Fashion Kills painted Kalverstraat black.
We do this to denounce the endless consumerism that the fast fashion industry promotes.
This consumerism is destroying our planet and this industry is destroying the lives of people who work in it.
This industry is responsible for overuse of natural resources.
For poisoning water sources.
For filling our oceans with microplastics.
For mass emissions.
For deserts of clothing left behind in places that we do not have to think about in the Netherlands.
The industry leaves workers to die in unsafe factories.
They are enslaved in horrific working conditions and earn hunger wages.
(If the wages are not stolen.)
Across the world, workers are murdered for trying to organize a union.
We can not let this go unnoticed.
We can not let them be ignored.
We chose this day because Black Friday represents this consumerism and senseless production.
It represents how our planet and the people on it are exploited.
All so that in the Global North we are able to buy more.
It represents how we sell the planet for consumption and profit.
It represents our relationship to our things. We buy instead of being satisfied with what we have.
Store prices show how little we think about people and the resources used to make our clothes.
Black Friday happens on a day that celebrates the genocide and colonialism in unceded Turtle Island.
(It is now known as the United States of America.)
We are eager for change.
The shops in our city centers that promote consumption must be returned to the people that live in the cities.
The workers in supply chains must be paid and protected.
They must be able to take back their power.
The planet must be defended.
We look for a better world.
We look for a world where Black Friday is a day of solidarity with people across the world in supply chains.
We look for a world where the nature that we are part of is taken care of.
We are out of time.
And we from Fast Fashion Kills are out of patience.
If we do not stop the coming climate crisis more lives will go lost.
More places will be uninhabitable.
More lives will be unlivable if we do not stop the crisis of labor rights.
More people will be dragged into distress.
We are out of time.
We must take action now.
