Xwebûn is a documentary that gives an insight in the civil war that is happening in Diyarbakir and the wider region of Bakur, Northern Kurdistan. As women seem to be specifically targeted in the repressive operations from the Turkish state, this documentary focusses on telling the stories of women involved in self-organized resistance structures; telling the stories of their history, their experiences and their efforts to organize as women in Northern Kurdistan.
Filmed in Diyarbakir / Bakur in May and June 2016, shortly after the - largely unreported - siege of Sur. The siege, which lasted from December 2015 up until March 2016 was the Turkish state’s response to Kurdish communities declaring autonomy in various districts in predominantly Kurdish cities. Around 200 Sur residents and Kurdish resistance fighters have been killed in an all out war that was initiated by the Turkish state, raiding the neighborhood with special police and military forces, tanks and heavy artillery attacks. This massacre being just one example of many similar situations happening throughout Bakur around that period, adding to a long history of genocide and repression from the Turkish state.
Xwebûn does not just tell the stories of women living in a state imposed civil war, but shows the resilience of those women, the power of their structures, their strength in resisting and how this is an integral part of the resistance against the fascist state of Turkey.
