Is the university a space for everyone? Are the arts and the humanities valued in society? Is space for critical minds diminishing? Join us at Roeterseiland for a night of panel discussions, music, lectures and poetry. Let’s reclaim our university for students, staff, and society. Let’s show what a new university looks like.
In 2015 students and staff occupied the Maagdenhuis for 46 days under the banner of the New University movement. Sadly their dream of an alternative to the neoliberal university was shut down. Negotiations and meetings were held, promises made, guarantees given. And yet here we are again, because not enough has changed. The movement is back, with Humanities Rally, NU!, University of Colour, ASVA Student Union, and UvA staff uniting in protest.
We need a democratized, decolonized university. We need investment in education rather than budget cuts. To fight for these demands, we held a Night of Protest, a March for Education, and a University Night. Unfortunately the latter ended with us being removed from the grass patch at Roeterseiland.
At the upcoming New University Night, we return to the grass patch and pick up where we left off three years ago. Before the summer begins, we take one more night to create space for those who want truly free, emancipatory education. Let’s reclaim our university for students, staff, and society. Let’s show what a new university looks like.
