Help us Save the Trees in Budapest – June 2016
If the Hungarian government has its way, hundreds of trees will be cut down in Budapest's City Park (known as “Városliget” in Hungarian).
The government's plan to build five new cultural buildings and turn City Park into a family theme park, means that developers will cut down hundreds of trees, permanently disturb existing wildlife in the park and make a very peaceful piece of nature into just another hectic part of Budapest, disturbed by traffic and noise.
City Park is one of Budapest's few major green spaces: a beautiful park full of old-growth trees, a castle, the circus, zoo and the Széchenyi thermal baths. Locals and visitors love this island of nature on the edge of a bustling capital city.
Városliget is typically full of runners, sportsmen, families and their children strolling, people walking their dogs, etc. They love the nature, real green space and the cleaner air in the park, in a part of the city that is not known for much green space nor for clean air.
Despite protests from activist groups and citizens, the Hungarian parliament enacted a law to implement its plan to “develop” the park, including cutting down hundreds of trees. Legislators want to spend billions in public funds as fast as possible on this project, ignoring the wishes of the Hungarian people as well as any environmental concerns.
Public opinion polls have shown that a majority of Budapest residents oppose the huge development plan for City Park.
