Wereld Vluchtelingen Dag in Amsterdam

World Refugee Day in Amsterdam

This afternoon, on the World Refugee Day, a group blocked the passage of a bridge in Amsterdam with multiple banners claiming that the refugees are welcome, to demand freedom of movement for all, and to highlight the highly problematic situation of refugees in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. This action blocked the flow of countless tourist boats on the canals of Amsterdam. It is first and foremost a disruption of the tourist industry in order to exert economic pressure on the Dutch government and the city of Amsterdam to radically change their immigration policy.
We are currently in the largest refugee crisis since World War II. Up to this date, we know that at least 1,800 refugees have drowned since the beginning of this year while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in their search for a secure life, which is be a basic human right. However, the borders are shut tight for anyone trying to escape the harsh conditions in their country of origin, even though those conditions are the ultimate result of European colonialism. On the other hand, borders are wide open to anyone who can afford Amsterdam as a tourist paradise with its luxury hotels and shopping areas. Moreover, Europe invests in the further militarization and thus the production of literal death through supporting the operations of Frontex.

When refugees are refused their right of asylum in the Netherlands, the Dublin Regulation prevents them to apply for asylum in another European country. As a result, many refugees end up on the streets (such as the We Are Here group) or in foreign detention. While the city of Amsterdam builds hotels to facilitate more tourists (even though there is supposedly a stop on building these hotels according to the municipality), the State of the Netherlands is building more jails for 'foreigners' (read: in Zeist, an actual 'family prison' is under construction, where even children will be locked up). Life on the street is not an option and life in prison is not either. The vicious cycle that undocumented refugees are in - where they have no right to a home, have no access to health care, social care and education, and are not allowed to work - needs to end.

Resistance against this violence is growing, despite attempts by governments and police forces to criminalize action groups (e.g., the We Are Here). Today we join those who are fed up with the tendency of putting profit-making above creating space for people who need safety. Freedom of movement should apply to all, not just to the ones who happened to hold the right papers.

As long as the politicians, such as mayor of Amsterdam Eberhart van der Laan, minister of Order and Justice Ard van der Steur, and Prime Minister Mark Rutte ignore the basic human rights they should grant all refugees, we ask everybody to stop being complicit. Therefore, we join the refugees' struggle and call for an escalation of non-violent actions.
