Syrena squat exists since Μarch 2011. The building was squatted in reaction to a murder of Jola Brzeska, an activist in the tenants movement against re-privatisation.
Syrena is a home for more than 30 people and serves as a social center for the community. Since the beginning Syrena is a tool used in a struggle for housing in Warsaw. The collective is actively involved in eviction blockades and campaigns against gentrification and re-privatisation.
At the moment Syrena hosts initiatives such as:
bicycle workshop · screen printing workshop · library · punk yoga · migrants support groups · antifascist groups · tenant groups · workers groups · anarchist black cross · Warsaw Revolutionary Theater · Chorale · Street university (language courses, skill-sharing, workshops)
Since a few months we've opened a cafe-infokiosque which serves as a gathering space. We are planning to open a 'locutorio' (call center where migrant community could call abroad for free) and we are thinking of a printing space in the future.
We are also involved in different struggles and initiatives outside of Warsaw, like the anti-fracking campaign in Zurawlow.
All donations - that will help us in everyday struggle to keep the existing projects and to consolidate new ones - are very much appreciated! Even small amounts add up with the solidarity we already receive - and if you have a deep pocket don't hesitate to support Syrena and the struggles it facilitates.
We aren't accepting money from NGOs or other shady sources. We're trying to find strategies that would make us completely independent from outside help. In the meantime, given the economical reality in poland, for us it becomes everyday struggle and we haven't had much success up to now.
That's why we're calling our for your support and solidarity!
Visit the social center whenever you want and give us a helping hand or chat with us during an event or read more at syrena.tk !
