Antarctica under threat, penguins adrift!
The squatted social centre Antarctica in Bos Lommer got notified that they will be evicted soon. As such, Amsterdam will lose a place that for the last four years has provided a place for people to live in, a vibrant cultural agenda, a free haven for activist organising, and a give-away-shop and garden for the neighbourhood. All this on the basis of volunteers and donations, against the logic of commerce.
The municipality, the owner, sold the building for a high price to a group that is planning to build new apartments for sale. This is a process we see all around the old popular neighbourhoods around the centre, where apartments for sale replace social housing and expensive hip cafes replace local stores. Beyond the fact that we might lose our own house and social centre, it is this kind of urban development that we reject in the strongest possible way.
When vice is tamed, all hope is forsaken. Stay in contact for the upcoming period, for exciting times are upon us. To be continued!
