Op woensdag 22 mei vindt er een Tweede Kamerdebat plaats over de strafbaarstelling van illegaliteit en het versoepelen van het vreemdelingenbeleid. Wij, de uitgeprocedeerde vluchtelingen van het Vluchthuis in Den Haag en de Vluchtkerk in Amsterdam roepen op om deze dag te demonstreren onder het motto: ‘Vluchteling, geen crimineel!’

Tijdens het debat zal er gesproken worden over de strafbaarstelling van illegaliteit en het versoepelen van het vreemdelingenbeleid. Een vreemde combinatie vinden wij, omdat de strafbaarstelling niet te rijmen valt met een humaner beleid. Binnen de PvdA woedde de laatste tijd een strijd over de strafbaarstelling. Tijdens het ledencongres dat vorige maand plaatsvond in Leeuwarden stemde 95% van de leden tegen dit wetsvoorstel. Maar in plaats van dat de partijtop hier iets mee deed legden ze deze overgrote meerderheid naast zich neer. Samsom en Spekman riepen een ledenraad bijeen waar een motie werd aangenomen met acht verbeterpunten binnen het vreemdelingenbeleid waaronder bijvoorbeeld vermindering van detentie. Maar buiten deze verbeterpunten zetten ze de strafbaarstelling toch door. Of de acht verbeterpunten er daadwerkelijk gaan komen is nog maar zeer de vraag. Wat wel vaststaat is dat de VVD en PvdA doorgaan met het crimineel maken van vluchtelingen.

Dat de strafbaarstelling alleen maar een symbolische maatregel is is echter niet waar. Een boete die kan oplopen tot 3900 euro zal tot nog meer detentie lijden omdat vluchtelingen niet mogen werken en de boete dus niet kunnen betalen. Vluchtelingen zullen nog minder snel hulp zoeken uit angst dat ze worden gepakt en strafbaargesteld zullen worden. Dit wetsvoorstel is de reinste criminalisering!

We zullen onze demonstratie starten vanaf het Centraal Station in Den Haag. We gaan via het Ministerie van Veiligheid en Justitie naar het Plein waar we zullen protesteren tot het debat begint. Dan zullen we de Tweede Kamer binnen gaan om het debat bij te wonen. Demonstreer samen met ons voor een humaan vluchtelingenbeleid en tegen criminalisering van vluchtelingen!

Wij kunnen niet terug naar het land waar wij vandaan komen omdat wij daar ons leven niet zeker zijn, maar ook hier worden ons onze mensenrechten ontzegd. Wij willen na jaren van onzekerheid, opsluiting in detentiecentra en uitsluiting van alle mensenrechten verblijfsrecht, zodat wij een menswaardig bestaan kunnen opbouwen.

22-05-2013 Demonstration: Refugee, not criminal!

Wednesday the 22nd of May a debate will take place at the Second Chamber of Parliament on the topics of illegality and on easing some aspects of the current immigration policy. We, the refugees of the Vluchthuis in The Hague and the Vluchtkerk in Amsterdam call out for a demonstration on this day under the title: ‘Refugee, not criminal!’

Topics of the debate will be the criminalisation of illegality and the easing of the immigration policy. A strange combination if you ask us, since the criminalization is quite the opposite of a more humane asylum law. Recently we’ve seen an internal conflict in the PvdA on the topic of criminalisation. During the memberscongress that took place in Leeuwarden last month, 95% of the party members voted against this proposed law. But in stead of acting on this huge majority the party leaders chose to ignore the message sent by their members. Samsom and Spekman called for a memberscouncil during which a resolution was accepted considering eight points of improvement of the immigration law, amongst others a decrease in the use of detention. But besides these points of improvement they’re still holding on to the criminalization law, and if these eight measures will eventually see the light is still to be seen. What is clear though is the fact that the VVD and PvdA will go through with the criminalisation of refugees.

But their argument that the criminalisation is just a symbolic measure is false. A fine that could rise to 3900 euro will only lead to more detention since refugees are not allowed to work and, because of this, will never be able to pay this fine. Refugees will seek for help even less because of fear of being caught and criminalised. This proposed law is nothing less than the criminalisation of refugees!

We’ll start our demonstration at Den Haag Central Station. From there we’ll go past the Ministry of Safety and Justice on our way to Plein, where we’ll be protesting untill the start of the debate. Afterwards we’ll go to the Second Chamber to be present at the debate. Come and demonstrate with us against the criminalisation of refugees!

We can not go back to our countries of origin because our lifes are not safe there, however also here our human rights are being denied. After years of uncertainty, imprisonment in detention centres and exclusion from all human rights we want our right to stay, in order to create a dignified existence.
