No Border Camp Brussel: weer massa arrestaties

Vrijdag avond zou er gedemonstreerd worden vanaf Gare Midi, tegen de gesloten centra en voor vrijheid van beweging. Politie stond al rond het kamp om mensen op te pakken. Bij het station ook massaal politie.
In Brussel is demonstratievrijheid een hol begrip. Er was een samenscholingsverbod. Veel politie stond klaar. Iedereen die er uitzag als potentiele deelnemer werd ingeladen. Tassen werden gecontroleerd. Protesterende omstanders die uit het station kwamen werden ook gearresteerd.
Iedereen werd in grote bussen geladen. Er vond een klopjacht in de wijde omgeving plaats. Op een plek waar mensen elkaar weer trachtten te treffen ook arestaties, ook weer mensen die nergens iets mee te maken hadden.
Vanmiddag staat ook weer een demo gepland. De arrestanten van gisteren, totaal 150, zaten op verschillende politiebureas vast en zijn vannacht om 3 uur op verchillende plekken in de stad vrijgelaten.

Kom uit uw kot!
VOOR EEN WERELD ZONDER GESLOTEN CENTRA EN GEVANGENISSEN
Omdat de vele revoltes in de gesloten centra van de laatste jaren getoond hebben wat deze centra werkelijk zijn: deportatiekampen van waaruit de staat diegenen uitwijst die hij als ongewenst beschouwt. Diegenen die, in de hoop oorlog en ellende te ontvluchten, hier de uitbuiting van het zwartwerk, de klopjacht van de flikken en de klasseringswoede van de bureaucraten die beslissen over hun 'wettelijk bestaan' vonden.
Omdat het lot waartoe de 'sans-papiers' veroordeeld worden slechts de weerspiegeling is van dat wat elkeen boven het hoofd hangt die de eindjes aan elkaar probeert te knopen tegenover alsmaar zwaardere levensomstandigheden. We lopen allemaal aan de leiband van de sociale zekerheid of de informele economie.
Omdat we allemaal rechtstreeks betrokken zijn door een wereld te aanvaarden die alsmaar meer categoriseert, selecteert, opsluit, elimineert naargelang de sociale en economische behoeften.
Omdat de ontspanningen en de opstanden in de gesloten centra en de gevangenissen evenals de aanvallen en daden van sabotage tegen de opsluitings- en deportatiemachine, telkens weer lichtpuntjes van hoop zijn voor diegenen die aan beide zijden van de muren strijden tegen alles dat hen onderdrukt.
VOOR EEN WERELD ZONDER GRENZEN EN STATEN
Omdat het gevecht tegen de structuren van opsluiting en uitbuiting (de gesloten centra, de gevangenis, de school, het werk...) niet gericht is op hun hervorming, maar op hun vernietiging.
Omdat grenzen niet kunnen bestaan zonder het racisme dat ons tegen elkaar opzet; omdat we de grenzen ook terugvinden in de opsluiting in gemeenschappen gebaseerd op religie en nationalisme.
Omdat de fameuze regularisatierondes van sans-papiers enkel een onderscheid en een hiërarchie aanbrengen tussen diegenen die aan de normen van de integratie en de noden van de economie voldoen en diegenen die overgeleverd worden aan de clandestiniteit.
Omdat de uitwijzingsmachine niet kan functioneren zonder de bedrijven die er hun zakken mee vullen (Besix, Valens, Sodexo, Dalkia, ISS Cleaning, Bank van de Post, SN Brussels Airlines, Air Maroc...) en zonder de instellingen die de selectie doorvoeren tussen diegenen die hier uitgebuit kunnen worden en diegenen die teruggestuurd woren (Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken, Fedasil, het Rode Kruis, alle politieke partijen zonder onderscheid...)

In Brussel ontstond regelmatig verwarring over de arrestaties en arrestanten. Hoeveel waren opgepakt en waar en wanneer en wie? Hoeveel zaten nog vast? Toen ik bovenstaande plaatste, dacht men dat iedereen was vrijgelaten.
Dit toont eens te meer de oncontroleerbare gewelddadige politiestaat die het daar is. De smeris kan er zijn gang gaan en het deksel blijft op de doofpot. Iemand vertelde me dat als je een klacht of aangifte tegen een smeris wilt indienen, dat je daarvoor honderden euro's moet betalen en dat vervolgens jaren later zal blijken dat er niets mee gebeurt.
Blijkens een bericht op http://bxl.indymedia.org/articles/237 zitten er nog steeds mensen vast, én zullen er nog mensen worden vervolgd die al vrij zijn. Het legal team van het NBC doet zijn/haar uiterste best maar staat voor een vrijwel onmogelijke opgave met zulke massa arrestaties.

Vorige week in Brussel, was het No Border kamp gekenmerkt door wijdverbreide willekeurige arrestaties en politiegeweld, waaronder scènes van foltering en
seksueel misbruik in de politiebureaus. Deze gewelddadigheden begonnen zondag 26 en namen een grote vlucht woensdag 29: er waren meer dan 500 arrestaties
en tientallen mensen gewond.
Na een aanvankelijke toestand van shock, nogal wat mensen (van Brussel en andere steden in België) zijn vastbesloten om deze ernstige gebeurtenissen niet zonder reacties te laten: een paar dozijn klachten zijn al verzonden aan het legal team, een juridische follow-up van de gedetineerde mensen wordt uitgevoerd, een demo tegen de repressie zal binnenkort plaatsvinden. Meer en meer organisaties nemen standpunt tegen willekeurige arrestaties ans politiegeweld, sommige unionisten reageren ook.
Wij sturen deze e-mail om te vragen dat alle gearresteerden, indien zij dit wensen, een klacht indienen en opsturen naar het legal team:  juridixnbc@vluchteling.be
Des te meer klachten zullen we hebben, des te sterker zullen we staan in de rechtszaken.
Voor uw klacht, hebben we nodig:
Uw naam en achternaam
Uw adres
Uw geboortedatum
(Optioneel, een andere manier contact met u opnemen, mail of telefoon)
Een rapport zo gedetailleerd mogelijk over uw arrestatie en uw detentie
(Mishandeling, beledigingen, vernederingen, diefstal ...).
Als u nog blessures, een check-up gedaan door een arts zal zeer nuttig zijn.
Ter herinnering daar het niet voor iedereen duidelijk was: de preventieve arrestaties gemaakt door de politie zijn illegaal in België, hetzelfde aangaande het nemen van een foto van jou als je je identiteit gegeven hebt. Dus zet alle gegevens in uw klacht.
We gaan uitvinden of het mogelijk is voor mensen die tijdens de detentie anoniem waren, om een klacht in te dienen (maar het is duidelijk dat je je naam moet geven om een klacht in te dienen). We zullen binnenkort een ander versturen e-mail over dit.
Deze mail doorsturen naar een maximum van mensen!

Last week in Brussels, the No Border camp was marked by widespread arbitrary arrests and police violence, including scenes of torture and sexual abuses in the police stations. These violences started from Sunday 26 and took a great extent from Wednesday 29: there were over 500 arrests and dozens of people injured.
After an initial state of shock, quite some people (from Brussels and other cities in Belgium) are determined to not let these serious events without reactions: a few dozen complaints have already been sent to the legal team, a legal follow-up of the detained people is carried out, a demo against repression will take place soon. More and more organisations take position against arbitrary arrests ans police violence, some unionist react as well.
We send this email to ask that all persons arrested make, if they wish, a complaint and send it to the legal team, their contact:

The more complaints we will have, the stronger we will be for the court cases.
For your complaint, we need:
Your name and surname
Your address
Your date of birth
(Optional, another way to contact you, mail or phone)
A report as detailed as possible of your arrest and your detention (beatings, insults, humiliation, theft ...).
If you still have injuries, a check up made by a doctor will be very useful.
To remind as it was not clear for everyone: the preventive arrests made by the cops are illegal in Belgium, the same as taking a picture of you if
you gave your identity. So put all details in your complaint.
We're going to find out if it is possible for people remaining anonymous during the detention to make complaints (but it is clear that to make the complaint you have to give your name). We will soon send another email about this.

The prisoners will be in court on Wednesday at 10.45u. The hearing will
be behind closed doors at Vierarmenstraat/Rue Quatres Bras.
Mobilisation tomorrowow 1O.00 AM in front of "Palais de JUstice" for
the 4 personns arrested during the week of Noborder Camp..
We don't have the time to ask an autorization but it's an emergency so
we have to put all the autorities "face à" our freedom of
expression..once again
We 'll have to avoid the confrontation because it will be unfortunely,
in case, against us once again..
The most important for everybody now is to protest once again for our
rights to manifest against the borders and... and to support who are in
jail now without proofs as we know now..
Come with calicots to put in the light once again our fondamental
fight...

It explains that Marianne Maeckelbergh, a University of Sussex graduate
and highly respected Lecturer of Anthropology at the University of Leiden
of the Netherlands, was arrested for attempting to take photographs of
public acts of brutality carried out by Belgian police. Following her
arrest she was subjected to what can only be described as physical and
psychological intimidation and torture by the Brussels Police on 1st of
October 2010.
Apparently, Dr Maeckelbergh was taken into police custody where she was
violently dragged by her hair, chained to a radiator, hit, kicked, spat
upon, called 'a whore', and threatened with sexual assault by the police.
She also witnessed the torture of another prisoner also chained to a
radiator.
According to this email, this did not take place in a dark corner of the
police station but out in the open, directly witnessed by police station
authorities, who gave the impression that this was standard practice.
Police removed her ID card, USB stick, the camera with the photos on it,
as well as 25 euros in cash - to date they have refused to return her
property.
Between October 1 and October 6 2010, she was imprisoned (without any due
cause) by the Belgian Police Force, during the No Border Camp.

Last Friday, during the No Border Camp: a convergence of struggles aiming to end the system of borders that divide us all, Marianne Maeckelbergh (US citizen and professor at the University of Leiden, Netherlands), a former Red Pepper worker, current contributor and a long-time global justice activist and the author of ‘The Will of the Many: How the Alterglobalisation Movement Is Changing the Face of Democracy’, was arrested for taking pictures while police were making arrests in Brussels, Belgium.
Having just entered Belgium, some two hours earlier, she witnessed violent arrests on the street. When Marianne began taking pictures, she was arrested. She was taken into police custody where she was violently dragged by her hair, chained to a radiator, hit, kicked, spat upon, called a whore, and threatened with sexual assault by the police. She also witnessed the torture of another prisoner also chained to a radiator.
This did not take place not in a dark corner of the police station but out in the open, directly witnessed by police station authorities, who gave the impression that this was standard practice. Police removed her ID card, USB stick, the camera with the photos on it, as well as 25 euros in cash - to date they have refused to return her property.
Roughly 500 people were arrested, many preemptively, including people involved in the No Border Camp and other protest activities including an alleged attack on a police station. Marianne has now been released but as of Wednesday 6 October, 2010 at least four people are still incarcerated.
Your help is needed to secure the release of the remaining prisoners and to demand that the police are held accountable.

"For fourteen unforgettable hours I was held in custody and subjected to their violence, their authority, their every whim. I was beaten, spat upon, repeatedly called a ‘dirty whore’ and chained to a radiator until 4am right outside the open door to the office of the chief of police, who observed it all and reacted only with silence. The police chief and I also witnessed the violent beating of another arrestee, also chained to a radiator, upon whom the police unleashed a fit of rage like none I’d ever seen – the young man fell to the ground screaming the only French word he knew, ‘non, non, non’. As I watched this, chained myself right next to the police chief, I wondered what country I was in, how such a thing could happen at all in this world, and where oh where had democracy and justice gone?"

Remaining Prisoners Released, Now for Legal Battle
On Friday, October 22nd, the last four prisoners were released. Now we need to focus on raising money to defend the arrestees against criminal charges and to sue the pants off the cops for their abusive and repressive behavior. In the next few days we'll be posting details on where you can contribute funds to support the legal effort and ideas on how you can help fundraise to support this battle against police brutality and the repression of activists and academics.
