Zondag 21 februari 2010; 20:30 Passeerdersgracht 23 Sunday 21th of February 2010; 20:30 Schijnheilig, Passeerdersgracht 23 At the third filmnight of Schijnheilig, we're screening the film Network, by Sidney Lumet en Paddy Chayevski. Komt dat zien! Howard Beale in one of his finer rants “I'm mad as hall and I'm not gonna take it anymore” Released in 1976, winning critical acclaim and four oscars, Network is one of those rare movies that has the uncanny ability to predict the future. The movie revolves around a fictional American television network, desperate to boost it's ratings. The main character is the news anchor turned prophet Howard Beale. After hearing of his immanent dismissal, Beale publicly announces he is going to kill himself on television. However, his mental collapse makes him useful again for the television network, who decide to build a show around the raving prophet that turns into a major success. The movie brilliantly depicts the turn to infotainment in the media industry, and dishes out a radical and sweeping critique to modern television culture. The script can easily be called visionary, in the way it prefigures the rise of emo-television, television evangelicals, networks like Fox News, and reality tv like Big Brother. All that, combined with a crazy script and impressive acting, makes it into first quality radical entertainment. English spoken, English subtitles.
