Registration Still Open for 2009 African Students’ Conference in The Hague On 21 November 2009 the Peace Palace in The Hague will be hosting this year’s African Students’ Conference. The annual conference, organised by the United Network of Young Peacebuilders and The African Committee, will focus on the topic of “Building Peace in Africa: The Role of Communication in Conflict Transformation”. The conference aims to explore the link between communication and conflict transformation and will feature expert speakers such as Professor Cees Hamelink (Amsterdam University), Professor Judith Marcuse (International Centre of Art for Social Change), Mr. Tonee Ndungu (Wazimba Youth Foundation, Kenya) and Mr. Ali Mahdi (Sudan Theatre Centre). There will also be an exhibition, live performances and interactive workshops on different modes of communication and their potential to contribute to conflict transformation in Africa. The evening will conclude with a festive reception, which also honours the 20th Anniversary of UNOY Peacebuilders. Targeted to African students studying in the Netherlands, African Diaspora youth and other young people interested in African peacebuilding, the conference is expected to attract around 300 participants. Founded in 1989, the United Network of Young Peacebuilders is an international network of youth working on youth and peacebuilding issues. The network is comprised of small, community based member organisations all around the world, and has an international secretariat based in The Hague.
