Students, researchers, and workers protest in front of Italian Consulate in Amsterdam. Letter to the Consul - Amsterdam, November 14th 2008. About fifty students, researchers and workers gathered at 10 AM this morning in front of the Italian Consulate in Vijzelstraat, to manifest solidarity with the General Strike called for today in Italy. The Strike comes after months of social struggles in universities against the approval of Italian law "Gelmini", which threatens the existence of public universities cutting public education funding, and putting knowledge and research under direct control of private interests. Protesters - mainly Italian expats and exchange students based in Den Haag, Leiden, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Amsterdam - hanged on the building's facade a banner with the slogan "We won't pay for your crisis", and a delegation of students gave to Italian vice Consul a statement (enclosed). As the protest becomes international - other demonstrations were held in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, UK and Turkey - Italian students are engaging, together with their Dutch fellow students, to establish a permanent discussion table for the future of a free, common and open European education after the neo-liberal crisis.
