Action against BNP Paribas bank's funding of a mega nuclear power plant in Bulgaria Today, June 5th 2007 twenty five people from the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, Argentina, USA, Philippines and Indonesia protested against the French bank BNP-Paribas's decision to provide 250 million for the Belene Nuclear Power plant in Bulgaria. Action took place in front of the bank's office in Amsterdam. The staff of the bank seemed unwilling to walk out, and after 20 minutes of intensive door-bell-ringing dared to speak to the protestors through a small front door window. The bank representative confirmed BNP-Paribas's involvement in a nuclear power plant in Bulgaria and did not add any other comments. If constructed, Belene NPP will become one of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, built on a territory, which is highly earth-quake prone. The 5- billlion euro plant is a highly political project, approved by the Bulgarian government with a fake environmental assessment. Many private banks have pulled out of the project, defining it as too risky. BNP-Paribas however seems to be eager to support a nuclear power plant, using the same reactor type as Chernobil's. Hopefully not for long. Organizers: Banktrack, ASEED Europe, Friends of the Earth International, Both Ends, WISE, XminY |
