Dutch uranium ship reaches St Petersburg SOFA Muenster - 07.03.2007 14:32
The Dutch ship MV Doggersbank with 1000 t of depleted uranium on board will reach the Russian port of St Petersburg today. It left Rotterdam harbour last Friday after it took the depleted uranium from the German uranium enrichment plant Gronau on board. Owner of the uranium ship is the Dutch shipping company Wagenborg from Delfzijl. The depleted uranium left Gronau by train last Wednesday amid several protest action along the railway line - among others in Almelo. On Thursday and Friday the uranium was loaded onto the MV Doggersbank. The Doggersbank has brought uranium from Rotterdam to Russia in the past, too. The shipping part is organized by the Wagenborg Shipping Company (www.wagenborg.com) who run the ferry services to Ameland for example. A picture of the MV Doggersbank is on our website. The Dutch-German-British Urenco holding ships their nuclear waste to Russia because they want to safe themselves the trouble (and money!) of storing the waste in Western Europe. In Russia the depleted uranium is either going straight to the open-air longterm-storage sites of Novouralsk, Tomsk and Angarsk or it is used to downblend weapon-graded highly enriched uranium or it might be used as tank breaking ammunition. We expect that the next transport from Gronau through the Netherlands to Rotterdam and on to Russia will take place withing four weeks (before Eastern).
