Romanian Jail Revolts
robiT - 11.12.2006 11:41

A series of revolts engulfed several penitentiaries across Romania over the weekend as convicts destroyed their rooms or joined hunger strikes in moves aimed at forcing the parliament to quickly adopt a draft law of collective pardon for non-violent prisoners, initiated by independent deputy Nati Meir.

More than 6,000 inmates at 24 prisons around Romania took part in hunger strikes and other protests. They are demanding amnesty and a better living.
The protests came days after a parliamentary committee rejected a bill that would have given an estimated 10,000 prisoners stenteced for minor crimes early release from prison.Because of this news(according to the official press agency) in the following penitentiaries broke out the revolts:Bucuresti,Craiova,Targu Mures,Miercurea Ciuc,Baia Mare(they stopped today),Brasov,Jilava,Targu Jiu,Codlea,Margineni, Braila, Galati, Slobozia,Ploiesti. But however the reality is that the jaild people demand better conditions, this was just the sparcle. In many of this jails people burned their sheets ,went into hunger strike. In the Rahova
penitentiary a prisoner commited self mutilation ,in the penitentiary from Timisoara another prisoner set himself on fire, but lucky enough the jail mates saved him from tottaly burn himself down(now he is in the hospital).

As a solidarity protest a group of romanian hackers defaced some romanian sites and placed their solidarity announcements with quotes from jailed prisoners on the hacked websites. http://www.cotroceni.ro/

Human rights groups have criticized the harsh living conditions in Romanian prisons since a long time , which are severely overcrowded and poorly funded. In many prisons, inmates have to share beds, and an insufficient number of guards means many activities, such as outdoor walks and exercise, are restricted.Torture and abuse is part of the everyday life .In this post- communist land the prison conditions are still reflecting the communist era where prisoners had no right for living. In 1997 took place a similar revolt, the situations are the same.

the rrvolt continues
robiT - 12.12.2006 11:51

Today the protest is in its 5th day.In 2 peniteniaries a gorup from the special police unit entered and isolated the prisoners from each other.According to the Penitentiary Press they where using mobile phones to communicate to the outside world, and because its not legal to have phone in the jail, those peole who possesd one they are facing punishment. The best organized jail in this revolt is the jail Barca Mare from Deva. The prisoners are taking turns in the noise making, they are who have the most contact with the outside world.Looking thru the forums that are on this topic or on the comments that are related on this topic on the romanian iternet sites,i realized that 90% off the population or even less is not solidair at all with the inprisonned people.
If u want to express solidaity with the inprisonned people then u can write to the following adresses:
