New uranium transport through NL to Russia SOFA Münster - 24.10.2006 17:22
Urenco, the owner of the German uranium enrichment plant in Gronau on the Dutch-German border is preparing a new shipment of depleted uranium through the Netherlands to Russia. At the moment the train waggons are being loaded and the transport is being expected over the next two weeks. The trains have carried in the past about 1000 t of depleted uranium in the form of uraniumhexafluoride (UF6) from Gronau first to Münster, then to Bad Bentheim and over the border to Oldenzaal, Hengelo, Almelo, Deventer, Apeldoorn and Amersfoort to Rotterdam. From there they are being shipped to St Petersburg and carried by train to the Ural mountains (another 30 hours by train). UF6 becomes the highly toxic hydrofluoric acid if it gets in touch with water or air humidity. And the transport containers are not really safe to do anything. Furthermore the uranium is being stored indefinitely in Russia which is regarded as a cheap dump. The Dutch Urenco site in Almelo is sending their DU-waste to Russia, too. In the past there have been a lot of protests in the Dutch-German border regions with several actions in Hengelo for example. In Russia resistance is growing, too. We support the protest because we think Russia should become our nuclear waste dump! E-Mail: sofa-ms@web.de Website: http://www.sofa-ms.de |

Of course it should read in the last sentence: We think that Russia should NOT become our nuclear waste dump. Sorry! If you want or give any further information about the transports you can contact us of course. E-Mail: sofa-ms@web.de Website: http://www.sofa-ms.de | |
