Activist Sailors to Iceland Needed! Saving Iceland - 04.05.2006 00:10
A 28m sailing ship is sailing from Amsterdam to Iceland, leaving around June 30th. We set sail to support the Saving Iceland protest camp starting July 21st to oppose the planned ALCOA aluminium smelter and megadams that would power it, and other heavy industry, which would ruin Europe's largest remaining wilderniss. We would return from Iceland to Amsterdam around August 4th, which would mean arriving back in the Netherlands late August. We are urgently seeking crew, there but particularly also back, preferably with sailing experience. The ship, Papillon, two masts, 4 sails (300 m2), was built in Germany in 1935 as a fishing vessel, sailing between Germany and Iceland. It has been converted for sailing in 1991 by a not-for-profit foundation. It carries a crew of 12 (or up to 14, with couples) We aim to keep expenses minimal. Food will be mostly organic and vegetarian/vegan.
