CASA debat at the University of Amsterdam:
Social forums - a new model for practicing democracy?
During this debate critical questions will be raised about the democratic potential of the worldwide social forum processes. We want to reflect on the possibilities of creating channels for democratic decision-making outside of established institutions. Thereby, the question is if the social forum processes might get caught up in the same institutional dilemmas as the dominant model of representative democracy. Are forms of non-representational democracy possible at all? And what can be our contribution in creating them, being academics and activists?
For relating this debate to the present situation, Gemma Galdon and Rene Danen will provide us with a short report about the last World Social Forum and the coming Dutch Social Forum.
