Depleted uranium train held up in Germany Diet Simon - 26.01.2006 16:52
A train carrying depleted uranium from Germany to Rotterdam for shipment to Russia was stopped between Gronau and Münster. Activists reported at http://de.indymedia.org//2006/01/137229.shtml that the train was forced to stop near Steinfurt with light signals and burning tyres. The activists did not say how long the train, heavily guarded by German border police, was halted. They say altogether 100 nuclear opponents held vigils at stations along the route. These were the only protests reported on either German or Dutch IndyMedia on what was a bitter-cold day. At 4 p.m. a vigil by 15 freezing people started outside the main gate of the Gronau uranium enrichment plant, the only one on Germany. Meanwhile a former German defence minister, Rupert Scholz, a CDU Conservative, has triggered a discussion about Germany acquiring its own nuclear weapons. Scholz said Germany needs binding pledges from its partners and NATO that they would protect it from a nuclear terrorist threat or blackmail with the use of nuclear weapons. He told the mass circulation Bild newspaper that the West’s nuclear protection guarantee needs to be adapted to the changed world situation. |
