Dr. Harry H. Wu (Shanghai, 1937) is a well-known human rights activist. On Friday afternoon he will present his case in debalie. Beside him on the podium will be Dr. Tak-Wing Ngo (sinology institute Leiden) with whom he will discuss the current situation in China. Harry Wu Prof. Maghiel van Crevel will chair this program. LIVE RealVideo stream: http://live.nu/1.ram 4.00 pm Amsterdam (10.00 pm Beijing timezone) Harry Wu received numerous awards for his activities, including the Martin Ennals Human Rights Award, the Hungarian Freedom Fighters Award, the Human Rights Advocate Award of Harvard University Foundation and the 1996 Geuzenpenning from the Dutch Foundation for the Geuzen Resistance Movement. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Price four times. Harry Wu’s first arrest was as a student in Beijing for speaking out against the Soviet invasion of Hungary. In 1960 he was sent to the Laogai – the Chinese Gulag – as a “counter-revolutionary rightist”. For nineteen years he has been imprisoned in many different forced labor camps around China. In 1985 he got exile in the USA and received a scholarship for Civil Engineering Geology at Berkeley University CA. Currently he is Executive Director of both the Laogai Research Foundation (LRF) and the China Information Center (CIC). Regardless of his history, during the 1990s Harry Wu made several trips to China to document the human rights abuses of the Laogai. In the summer of 1995 he was again arrested by the Chinese government and sentenced to 15 years of prison. Only as the result of an extensive international campaign this sentence was annulled. Harry Wu published three books: Laogai – The Chinese Gulag (1992), Bitter Winds (1993) and Troublemaker (1996).
