The Legalisation of Prostitution : A failed s Sisyphe - 07.07.2004 04:13
As countries are considering legalizing and decriminalizing the sex industry, Janice G. Raymond urge us to consider the ways in which legitimating prostitution as "work" does not empower the women in prostitution but does everything to strengthen the sex industry. As countries are considering legalizing and decriminalizing the sex industry, Janice G. Raymond urge us to consider the ways in which legitimating prostitution as "work" does not empower the women in prostitution but does everything to strengthen the sex industry. Read The Legalisation of Prostitution : A failed social experiment, by Sheila Jeffeys Sheila Jeffreys shows that the social experiment of legalising brothel prostitution which took place in Australia in the 1980s and 1990s has failed in all of its objectives i.e. stopping the illegal industry and police corruption, reducing the harm to women, stopping street prostitution. Read "Legitimating Prostitution as Sex Work : UN Labour Organization (ILO) Calls for Recognition of the Sex Industry (Part One and Two)", by Janice G. Raymond. Janice G. Raymond analyses a controversial 1998 report of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the official labor agency of the United Nations, calling for economic recognition of the sex industry. Citing the expanding reach of the industry and its unrecognized contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) of four countries in Southeast Asia, the ILO urges official recognition of what it terms "the sex sector." Seems BS to me, after all, if prostitution gets a union and salaries are paid just like any other salary, then there can be no sexual slavery. If illegal women are found in a legal sexclub though, it will be closed so they can hardly cope with their illegal competitors. I can imagine it is financially not feasible for the clubs unless the illegal clubs are buggered into obscurity by law enforcemetn. | Legalisation of prostitution? Very bad idea | m - 20.07.2004 06:50
The legalisation of prostitution can also lead to situations where the government or the organisations for work and income and so, are able to force women into a job as a prostitute! If they refuse such a job, which seems very reasonable to me, they could lose their benefit fees! That's the other side of the legalistation of prostitution. It becomes a legal job so women could be forced to do it, if they are looking for work. This time not by a pimp or so, but by the government! It perfectly fits into the picture of opression against women so it should never be supported. | |
