Vandaag een jaar geleden, 16 maart 2003, werd de Amerikaanse activiste Rachel Corrie gedood door een Israëlische militaire bulldozer in Rafah (Gazastrook, Palestina). Terwijl zij probeerde het huis van een
Palestijnse familie te beschermen, reed een Israëlische soldaat met een Caterpillar-machine van negen ton op haar in. Hij reed over haar heen, schakelde achteruit en gaf waarschijnlijk de genadeklap door nog een keer over haar heen te rijden.
Rachels dood was geen ongeluk. Ze stond ruim dertig meter voor de bulldozer, was gekleed in een feloranje vest en sprak de soldaten
duidelijk hoorbaar toe door een megafoon.
Rachels dood was ook geen incident. Zoals Rachel zelf beschreef in indringende e-mails aan haar ouders (zie:  http://www.rachelcorrie.org/emails.htm), is geweld de enige manier waarop het Israëlische leger en de Israëlische overheid communiceren met de Palestijnse bevolking. Met een groot gevoel voor rechtvaardigheid en
verantwoordelijkheid die zij als Amerikaans burger droeg voor deze situatie, wees ze haar familie er telkens weer op dat ze zich geen zorgen moesten maken om haar, maar om de Palestijnse families bij wie ze logeerde.
Ter herinnering aan Rachel herdenken wij vandaag daarom de 3.200 Palestijnse burgers en meer dan honderd vreedzame activisten die sinds Rachels dood omkwamen en gewond raakten in Palestina. In het bijzonder noemen we:
## Brian Avery (24) - 5 april 2003 - Jenin - Zonder aanleiding of aankondiging met een machinegeweer in het hoofd geschoten door Israëlische soldaten in een gepantserd militair voertuig. Verloor de helft van zijn
gezicht en ondergaat nog steeds uitgebreide plastische chirurgie. ## Tom Hurndall (25) - 11 april 2003 - Rafah - In het hoofd geschoten door een Israëlische scherpschutter in een wachttoren, terwijl hij Palestijnse kinderen uit de vuurlinie van een tank probeerde te halen. Overleed op 13 januari 2004, zonder wakker te zijn geworden uit zijn coma. ## Hussein
Ahmad - 31 december 2003 - Budrus - Met scherp in het hoofd geschoten tijdens een vreedzame demonstratie tegen de Apartheidsmuur. Overleefde de aanval. ## Gil Na'amati (22) - 26 december 2003 - Mas'ha - Gericht tweemaal in de knie geschoten tijdens een vreedzame demonstratie tegen de
Apartheidsmuur, drie weken na het eind van zijn dienstplicht in het Israëlische leger. Zal zijn been nooit meer kunnen gebruiken. ## Zaqaria Mahmoud Eid (26) - 26 februari 2004 - Biddu - Doodgeschoten door een
scherpschutter die vanaf het dak van een huis gericht schoot op een vreedzame demonstratie tegen de Apartheidsmuur. ## Mohammed Rayan (26) - 26 februari 2004 - Biddu - Doodgeschoten door een scherpschutter die vanaf het dak van een huis gericht schoot op een vreedzame demonstratie tegen de Apartheidsmuur. ## Mohammed Saleh Bedwan (20) - 26 februari 2004 - Biddu - Overleed aan een hoofdwond veroorzaakt door een rubberkogel afgevuurd door een scherpschutter tijdens een vreedzame demonstratie tegen de Apartheidsmuur ## Abu Nabil Abu Eid - 26 februari 2004 - Biddu - Overleed aan een hartaanval veroorzaakt door excessief gebruik van traangas tijdens een vreedzame demonstratie tegen de Apartheidsmuur
Terwijl politici praten over het aantal te ontmantelen nederzettingen en de machtsverdeling tussen militante facties, gaat het geweld door.
Geweldloos verzet wordt met steeds hardere wapens neergeslagen. Ook wij moeten ons bewust worden van de verantwoordelijkheid die wij hiervoor dragen. Zolang Nederlands bedrijven onderdelen leveren voor de F-16s en
Apaches die Rachels buren beschoten en banden voor de bulldozer die haar overreed, kunnen wij niet doen alsof dit geweld niets met ons te maken heeft.

A year ago today, 16 March 2003, American activist Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in Rafah (Gaza Strip, Palestine). While she was trying to protect the house of a Palestinian
family, an Israeli soldier drove a nine-ton Caterpillar-machine into her.
He drove over her, pulled into reverse, and probably gave the final blow by driving over her again.
Rachel's death was no accident. She was standing more than thirty metres in front of the bulldozer, dressed in a bright-orange jacket, and was clearly audible speaking to the soldiers through a megaphone.
Rachel's death was no incident either. As Rachel herself described in heartbreaking e-mails to her parents (see http://www.rachelcorrie.org/emails.htm), violence is the only means the Israeli army and government use to communicate with the Palestinian population. With a great sense of justice and responsibility that she as
an American citizen carried for this situation, she emphasised to her family again and again that they should not be worried about her, but about the Palestinian families she was staying with.
In memory of Rachel, we therefore commemorate today the 3,200 Palestinian
civilians and more than a hundred non-violent activists that have died and were injured in Palestine since Rachel's death. In particular we want to mention:
## Brian Avery (24) - 5 April 2003 - Jenin - Without provocation or announcement shot in the head with a machinegun by Israeli soldiers from an armoured military vehicle. Lost half of his face and is still undergoing extensive plastic surgery. ## Tom Hurndall (25) - 11 April 2003 - Rafah - Shot in the head by an Israeli sniper from a watch tower, while trying to move Palestinian children from the firing range of a tank. Died 13 January 2004, without having woken up from his coma. ## Hussein Ahmad - 31 December 2003 - Budrus - Shot in the head with live ammunition during a
peaceful demonstration against the Apartheid Wall. Survived the attack. ## Gil Na'amati (22) - 26 Decembre 2003 - Mas'ha - Twice directly shot in the knee during a peaceful demonstration against the Apartheid Wall, three weeks after he was released from military service in the Israeli army.
Will never recover the use of his leg. ## Zaqaria Mahmoud Eid (26) - 26 February 2004 - Biddu - Killed by a sniper targeting a peaceful demonstration against the Apartheid Wall from the roof of a home. ##
Mohammed Rayan (26) - 26 February 2004 - Biddu - Killed by a sniper targeting a peaceful demonstration against the Apartheid Wall from the roof of a home. ## Mohammed Saleh Bedwan (20) - 26 February 2004 - Biddu - Died from a head wound sustained by a rubber bullet fired by a sniper during a peaceful demonstration against the Apartheid Wall. ## Abu Nabil Abu Eid - 26 February 2004 - Biddu - Died from a heart attack caused by excessive use of teargas during a peaceful demonstration against the
Apartheid Wall.
While politicians talk about the amount of settlements to be dismantled and the division of power between militant factions, the violence continues. Non-violent resistance is crushed with stronger means every day. We as well should become aware of our own responsibility in this. As long as Dutch companies supply parts for the F16s and Apaches that shot Rachel's neighbours and tires for the bulldozer that killed her, we cannot pretend this violence has nothing to do with us.

"In fact, with respect to Israeli policy, the primary tangible consequence of Rachel Corrie's death, was a crackdown on foreign activists.
Officials at all ports of entry into Israel, including Ben-Gurion Airport and the Allenby Bridge crossing on the Jordan River, were instructed to be on the lookout for foreign nationals whose intention in entering Israel appeared to be protest. A number of activists were turned away.
The army, meanwhile, sought to keep activists out of the territories. "This policy is difficult to enforce in the West Bank, but in Gaza, with the exception of the personnel of international humanitarian organizations and the like, no one can cannot gain entry.""

Tja, de Israelische versie van Bob de Bouwer, Job de Bouwer, schijnt met zijn bulldozertje niet zo zachtzinnig met islamitische fellow-travelers om te gaan...
Maar ja, hij komt ook maar uit de onderdrukte arbeidersklasse, dus zie het maar als een uiting van onmacht en frustratie...
