Braziliaanse vakbondsleider te gast op tentoonstelling over klimaatverandering
Een week voor de start van de negende VN klimaatconferentie, komen op het tweede weekend van de tentoonstelling over klimaatverandering "Silencing Voices Trading Lives" in Amsterdam, twee Braziliaanse inwoners vertellen over de gevolgen voor mens en de lokale natuur in Brazilië van klimaatprojecten van de Wereldbank. Met dit soort projecten hoeft de Nederlandse regering minder aan de uitstoot van CO2 te doen op eigen bodem. Naast de twee inwoners van Brazilië zijn er foto's en video's. De entree is gratis.
Een aantal zeer omstreden projecten komt aan bod van vrijdag tot zondag. Vanuit Brazilië zullen Eliseu José de Oliveira, directeur van een lokale vakbond en Geraldo Armando Martins, onderzoeker naar de gevolgen van het grote klimaatproject, verhalen over het Plantar-project, een omstreden project waarbij grote plantages van Eucalyptus-planten de energie voor de stallfabriek Plantar moeten leveren. Ook staat een project in Zuid-Afrika, dat de levensduur van een kankerverwekkende vuilnisbelt midden in een arme wijk met tien jaar verlengt, centraal dit weekend.
Van 1 tot 12 december is in Milaan de negende klimaatconferentie van de Verenigde Naties, met op de agenda een evaluatie van wereldwijd klimaatbeleid. Projecten, zoals het Braziliaanse Plantar-project zullen ter discussie komen te staan. Maar de kans is groot dat het geld dat met deze projecten verdiend wordt, door de VN belangrijker gevonden wordt dan de gevolgen hiervan voor mensen wereldwijd. Vanwege economische belangen worden duurzame oplossingen voor de klimaatverandering almaar uitgesteld. Onder het mom "duurzame ontwikkeling" wordt bovendien een ontwikkeling gesteund dat de monocultuur stimuleert, grondwater uitput,luchtvervuiling veroorzaakt en inwoners hun landbouw en originele bosgrond ontneemt. De Wereldbank financiert met steun van de Nederlandse regering en banken dit soort klimaatprojecten wereldwijd. De gevolgen voor de bevolking en de lokale natuur zijn groot, terwijl een mogelijk positief effect op het klimaat verwaarloosbaar is.
Het hele weekend zijn er foto's te zien over de omgeving van het project in Brazilië. Vrijdag en zondag zijn er films over soortgelijke projecten in Brazilië en Zuid-Afrika. In de films en op de tentoonstelling staat het verzet centraal van gewone mensen tegen deze projecten en het geld dat verdiend wordt onder het excuus van "duurzame ontwikkeling". Vooral de omstreden rol die de Wereldbank hierbij speelt, zal hierbij naar voren komen.
Tijdens de tentoonstelling wordt ook gedebateerd wat mensen kunnen ondernemen tegen de bedrijven, de regeringen en financiële instituties zoals de Wereldbank die duurzame oplossingen voor klimaatverandering almaar blijven uitstellen of saboteren. Speciale gast is naast de Brazilianen, een vertegenwoordiger van de World Bank Boycott Strategy. Zij zal een workshop geven over de Wereldbank en wat de resultaten zijn van de wereldwijde Wereldbank Boycott campagne.
Dit is het tweede weekend van de interactieve expositie Silencing Voices Trading Lives. De expositie is het hele weekend geopend van 16:00 tot 22:00 op de Langebrugsteeg 2 (hoek Rokin). Het derde weekend, volgende week, staat in het teken van waterprivatisering. Vorige week stond de politiek van klimaatverandering centraal.
De expositie is een initiatief van Carbon Trade Watch en Concrete Dok. Carbon Trade Watch (TNI) is een onderzoeksbureau naar emissiehandel en de economie achter de oplossingen voor klimaatverandering. Een aantal is in Brazilië op onderzoek geweest. Het bureau is opgericht in 2001 na de klimaatconferentie in Den Haag en is gevestigd in Amsterdam. Concrete Dok is een internationaal permant documentaire project met een artistieke inslag dat streeft naar culturele verandering.

Speakers from ‘The Alert Against the Green Desert’ movement, Brazil from 20.00 This night of films and speakers is part of the three week exhibition, "Silencing Voices, Trading Lives" (21 Nov-7 Dec, Fri to Sun 16.00- 22.00) examining the issues surrounding climate change, pollution trading, the World Bank and water privatisation with a photo exhibition, a sound installation, film screenings, workshops and on-line resources. The Green Desert Eucalyptus plantations are responsible for a long list of environmental degradation that takes many forms including water and soil contamination through over-use of agro-toxics, water diversion, air pollution, and in some cases irreversible damage to other plant and animal species. All of these factors, in turn, affect human life - primarily in rural communities. The people of Brazil were never consulted as to whether they wanted eucalyptus monoculture in the areas where they live. Rather, they were forced off their lands brutally during the military dictatorship. Those that have resisted all have stories to tell. Stories that the World Bank, the Financial Institutions, the companies and the Governments never bothered to hear. Pollution trading now looms in the horizon as another hurdle in the struggle. Deemed "sustainable development" the plantations are considered "carbon sinks" for the dangerous pollution levels in the North. At the ninth United Nations Conference of the Parties in Milano Italy, Dec.1-12, 2003 the issue of plantations and sinks will be a focus issue on the climate agenda.

Geraldo Armando Martins who lives in the town of Curvelo and is an advisor of the rural workers trade union of Curvelo, that defends the rights of Plantar workers and members in the neighbouring communities of the Plantar plantations. He has been very active in discussing within the trade union the impacts of the eucalyptus and helped the trade union (that exists only a few years) in signing their first collective agreement with Plantar.
Eliseu José de Oliveiras is the director of the rural trade union of Rio Pardo de Minas, in the north of Minas Gerais State. He is from a peasant´s family and is struggling with some other trade unions in the region and with the support of MST and other organizations to reconquer lands that are in the hands of the eucalyptus companies but belong to the communities. This is a hard struggle and they already had some direct confrontations with some companies, but the force of the community organization has resulted already in getting 5,000 hectares back from one company. They are now discussing how to recover these lands.
Filka Sekulova from ASEED Europe will introduce the problem of World Bank funds to the extractive industries and speak about the World Bank Boycott Strategy. The World Bank Bonds Boycott is a tool to prosecute the donors of climate change. The World Bank is one of the largest players in oil, gas and coal extraction and transportation industry worldwide and respectively in climate change. However the World Bank is highly dependent on the sale of bonds to public organizations. From there the bank gets 80% of its income.
