Action at the Swiss embassy [en/nl]

Activists symbolically blocked the entrance of the Swiss consulat in Amsterdam to present demands for further enquiries and payment of medical bills related to the events at the G8 meeting 1-3 June 2003, especially the intentional cutting down of the climber Martin who fell about 20 meters, and the precission shots at the journalist Guy. The action is one of several taking place in different cities to support fellow activists in Switzerland.
The consul acted diplomatic by saying that he would fax the demands to the appropriate authorities as demanded, but he was taken by surprise when somebody handed him a cell phone with Martin on the line He didn't much more to say then "how are you? where are you? Good recovery."

De actievoerders bij het consulaat in Amsterdam en in andere steden eisen:
* dat de Zwitserse autoriteiten onmiddelijk meewerken aan een publiek,
onafhankelijk onderzoek naar de veiligheids- en beleidsstategie gedurende
de g8-top. En dat ze de aanbevelingen van dit onderzoek volledig navolgen.
Het onderzoeksorgaan moet onder het toezicht van de juridische commissie
van de Basic Human Rights and Globalisation uitgevoerd worden,
* dat de Zwitserse autoriteiten alle medische en juridische onkosten
vergoeden van de personen die in deze mate gewond raakten door het
politiegeweld zodat ze langdurige medische behandeling behoeven. Dit moet
compensatie omvatten voor blijvende schade,
* de onmiddelijke schorsing van zowel de verantwoordelijke politieagenten
die ter plekke waren als hun meerderen. Zowel voor de brugblokkade bij het
riviertje de Aubonne waar het klimtouw werd doorgesneden (wat de ernstige
verwondingen van Martin Shaw als gevolg had) als voor het incident waar
doelbewust werd geschoten op de onafhankelijke journalist Guy Smallman

The protesters at the consulate in Amsterdam and in other cities demand the
following of the Swiss Authorities;
# That the Swiss Authorities immediately open, and cooperate with, an
independent public enquiry into the complete policing and security policy
surrounding the G8 summit, and that they implement fully its
recommendations. The enquiry body should be monitored or implemented by the
legal commission _Basic Human Rights and Globalization_.
# That the relevant and responsible Swiss Authorities fully cover all
medical and legal costs incurred by those so seriously injured in episodes
of police brutality as to need long term medical treatment. This must
include payment of all justifiable compensation.
# The immediate suspension of the police officers responsible, and their
commanders on scene at the time during the incidents of the cutting of the
climbing rope during the Aubonne bridge blockade (which caused the severe
injuries of Martin Shaw) and the targeted shooting of independent journalist
Guy Smallman.

Actie bij Zwitserse Consulaat als protest tegen politieoptreden
tijdens G8-top in Evian
In Amsterdam vindt een symbolische blokkade met touwen en spandoeken plaats
bij het Consulaat van Zwitserland om een eisenpakket aan de Zwitserse
autoriteiten voor te leggen.
Het protest is in solidariteit met Martin Shaw, de man die tijdens een
vreedzame snelweg-blokkade van een hoogte van 20 meter naar beneden is
gevallen nadat een agent het touw waaraan hij hing, doorsneed. Aan de val
hield Martin onder andere gebroken ruggewervels, een gebroken bekken en
verbrijzelde enkel over. Hij ligt nog steeds in het ziekenhuis.
Een ander voorbeeld van onverantwoord politieoptreden was het gericht
schieten van een 'schokgranaat' (of concussion grenade in het engels) op de
benen van Guy Smallman, een onafhankelijke journalist, op het moment dat hij
van een politieaanval wegvluchtte. Hij wacht een rehabilitatie van mogelijk
18 maanden voor hij weer normaal zal kunnen lopen.
In het algemeen meldden onafhankelijke waarnemers vele onuitgelokte
aanvallen op de demonstranten en omstanders tijdens de top in Evian.
Shaw en de andere actievoerders betrokken in de blokkade willen de politie
strafrechtelijk vervolgen en eisen compensatie. Ook Smallman onderneemt
juridische stappen, bijgestaan door de National Union of Journalists.
Dit protest is onderdeel van een reeks van acties gericht op de Zwitserse
autoriteiten. Tussen 13 en 20 juni was er bijvoorbeeld een week lang durende
bezetting van het Zwitserse consulaat in Barcelona. Twee actievoerders
hingen aan dit gebouw en waren voor drie dagen in hongerstaking. Deze
maandag, 23 juni, zijn er protesten bij Zwitserse ambassades en consulaten
in diverse landen om de verontwaardiging te uiten over de repressie en brute
politieoptreden gedurende de G8. Tot deze acties werd overgaan nadat een
verzoek tot financiële compensatie van de kwetsuren en de eis voor een
onafhankelijk onderzoek naar het
politieoptreden bij de Zwitserse autoriteiten op onwil stuitte.

Action at Swiss Consulate in protest against police brutality during G8
summit in Evian
In Amsterdam, there will be a symbolic blockade with ropes and banners at
the Swiss consulate, to present a list of demands to the Swiss Authorities.
The protest is in solidarity with electrician Martin Shaw, who fell from a
hight of 20 meters during a non-violent highway blockade, when a police man
cut the rope he was hanging from. Shaw is still in hospital suffering from a
broken back, pelvis and ankle, amongst other injuries.
Throughout the days of the summit, testimonies recorded from independent
witnesses described as _commonplace_ cases of violent beatings, unprovoked
attacks of protesters and mass arrests at legal gatherings. Another
well-documented case of more serious violence and brutality is the targeted
shooting of Guy Smallman, an independent journalist. Smallman, was shot in
the leg with a concussion grenade, whilst fleeing a police attack, and
having undergone reconstructive surgery to his calf, could take up to 18
months to recover full mobility.
Shaw and other activists present at the blockade intend to criminally
prosecute the police, and sue for compensation. These will include a call
for an independent public enquiry into the security and policing strategy
surrounding the G8 summit. Smallman is also taking legal counsel, with help
from the National Union of Journalists.
International Protests Intensifies in Wake of G8 Summit Violence.
These protests mark an intensification of pressure on the Swiss Authorities,
following on the heels of a week-long climbing occupation of the Swiss
Consulate in Barcelona. From June 13th to 20th, two activists hung from the
twelve storey consulate on a hunger strike. This Monday, 23rd of June,
protesters in numerous countries will visit Swiss consulates to voice their
outrage at the political repression and police brutality during the recent
G8 meeting. These actions were mounted when compensation claims by those
injured as a result of police brutality, and demands for an independent
enquiry into police accountability, were met by apathy from the Swiss
Authorities.
