Genespotting: A different form of anti-Genetic engineering action
The debate surrounding genetically modified foods is reaching at a critical stage. Countries in the Global South are under pressure to accept GM food as food aid. The US government is on the verge of taking the EU to the WTO regarding the ban on GM imports even while the EU moratorium on GMOs is under threat. This is all happening while new reports are surfacing about the dangers of contamination to (organic) agriculture, the increase in herbicide resistant weeds and that some insects thrive of GM crops. Yet the corporations promoting the destruction of biodiversity will stop at nothing to see their profits protected.
A SEED Europe calls for a global week of action against the biotechnology industry from the 14th till 20th of May. We hope that as many local groups as possible will join us and do actions on any of these days against field trials and the corporations who promote and work on genetic modification. Some examples are GE test fields; a university laboratory; a company headquarters; a committee in charge of genetics policy; a biotech factory; a corporate lobby group promoting genetic engineering. Already now groups have shown an interest to do actions in Belgium, Albania, Spain, Sweden, Serbia, Paraguay and the Netherlands.
The type of action is up to you, although a suggestion is to do a genespotting action - this kind of actions happened successfully in Belgium and we would like to promote them. The basic idea is to get a group of people together, go to a GE test site and ask lots of difficult questions to highlight the issue and raise local and national knowledge about the presence of a genetic experiment in the area. Hopefully you can get the local or national media to come with you, to help increase awareness about the site and its (lack of) accountability. You could also invite farmers from the region, or involve the local people in discussion. It is a very open kind of action. We realise it can be difficult in some countries to find out information about test sites etc. but you can find a lot of info on internet, or in government publications about permits for GE testing (in the EU this information should be free for everyone to access). If you need any help, we may be able to support you with ideas. (see  http://biotech.jrc.it for a list of test fields in the EU)
There will be a video available (in English or French ) about genespotting from previous actions in Belgium so let us know if you would like a copy. We are also making posters and leaflets available for downloading from our website, or to be mailed to you by post.

Ga mee naar Noord-Oost Polder en Drenthe

Sinds kort is weer een aantal vergunningen afgegeven voor het veldproeven met genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen. Deze liggen te midden van akkers met gewassen die voor de markt geteeld worden. In de open lucht telen van genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen, maakt de richting die het stuifmeel en andere delen van het gewas uitgaan oncontroleerbaar.
Genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen zijn gevaarlijk, omdat er nog veel te weinig informatie is over reacties die de veranderde genen aan kunnen gaan met hun omgeving en het DNA van andere organsimen. .
A SEED wil met de genespotting-week protesteren tegen het bestaan van open proefvelden en de plaats van de velden bekend maken bij omwonenden. We roepen op tot een wereldwijde genespotting-week van 14 t/m 20 mei.
Genespotting is een inspirerende aktievorm waarbij je uitzoekt waar er wordt geexperimenteerd met genetisch gemanipulatie. Vervolgens ga je er met een groep mensen heen om om opheldering te vragen over de aktiviteiten en omwonenden bewust te maken van de mogelijke gevaren hiervan. Zo worden verantwoordelijken in de schijnwerpers gezet en wordt.er geprobeerd genetische manipulatie te stoppen.
geplande acties in Nederland:
vrijdag 16 mei in Flevoland: aktie en excursie in Flevoland en Noord-Oost Polder en aktie-voorbereidingen voor zaterdag.
Verzamelen voor de bus: 9.30 uur Centraal Station, tegenover Victoria Hotel. 's Middags gaat de bus door naar Groningen, naar de overnachtingsplaats.
zaterdag 17 mei in Drenthe: proefvelden met genetisch gemanipuleerde aardappelen. Vertrek met de bus vanuit Groningen: 10.00 uur, Eerste Drift/Spilsluizen 2.

Ik lees nu dat gen-spotting op 16 en 17 mei is, terwijl op de flyers stond dat het 17 en 20 mei is. Is de datum veranderd, is er ergens en vergissing gemaakt?

Er zijn meerdere acties in diverse landen gepland. De twee genespottingacties in Nederland vinden plaats op 16 en 17 mei.
En na het uitzoeken van de juiste proefvelden is het actieplan nog een keer omgegooid en de datum veranderd. Het kan zijn dat er op een oudere flyer nog een andere datum stond.
