SHELTER AID CAMPAIGN ICDWRI - 28.01.2003 17:14
International Campaign for the Defense of Women’s Rights in Iran Women who are the victims of violence and backward religious traditions in Iraqi Kurdistan need a shelter. Who are these women who seek a shelter? They are women who fear to be: killed by their husbands, brothers or other male relatives; burnt by their husbands or male relatives; shot at by the police; publicly executed; stoned to death; disabled and disfigured; in the state of depression and see no other way than committing suicide; kidnapped and secretly murdered; What is their "crime"? Standing for their self-respect and refusing to blindly take orders from husbands; Choosing their own partners and refusing to marry the men chosen by their fathers; Bringing shame to the family’s honor because of being rape victims; Taking part in social gatherings without permission of their families; Committing adultery. Who wants to build a shelter for women? The "Independent Women’s Organization" (IWO) in Kurdistan is planning to build a shelter for women who are the victims of violence and other criminal acts. This organization was formed on 8 March 1992 in Kurdistan in protest to the massive wave of terror waged against women in Iraqi Kurdistan in March 1991. IWO has since then helped many women who are victims of violence by providing safe houses for them, and by organizing meetings at schools, work places, and public places in order to give assistance to women. The current cases followed up by IWO are: Struggling to free a women who has been kept prisoner by her husband in her own house for 7 years.
