JOURNALISM AND COLLABORATION by Henk Ruyssenaars* One of the absolutely best journalists in the world, Robert Fisk, in The Independent (UK) - writes the following about the role of journalists in the present propaganda-war concerning Iraq : http://argument.independent.co.uk/low_res/story.jsp?story=373102&host=6&dir=140 Quote : "Western journalists play a leading role in this propaganda. Take Eric Schmitt in TheNew York Times a week ago. He wrote a story about America's decision to "confront countries that sponsor terrorism". And his sources? "Senior defence officials", "administration officials", "some American intelligence officials", "the officials", "officials", "military officials", "terrorist experts" and "defence officials". Why not just let the Pentagon write its own reports in The New York Times? But that is what is changing. More and more Americans - aware that their President declined to serve his country in Vietnam - realise that their newspapers are lying to them and acting as a conduit for the US government alone. More and more Britons* are tired of being told to go to war by their newspapers and television stations and politicians. Indeed, I'd guess that far more Britons are represented today by the policies of President Chirac of France than Prime Minister Blair of Britain." (end quote) *And Europeans and other people in general ? A poll by TIME/CNN* on Internet shows the following - for the US hairraising - results : Which country - it is asked - poses the greatest danger to world peace in 2003 ? Today the poll stands at this : North Korea 7.5 % Iraq 8.6 % The United States 83.9 % Total Votes Cast: 298.443 *TIME/CNN-poll But, according to world famous playwright Harold Pinter the United States is dangerous : http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=40&ItemID=2739 The question of course should be asked : Are journalists in a sense killers too ? See : http://dc.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=19469 A clear example is right now the deadly way of operating of some media in Venezuela, as described here in 'Le Monde Diplomatique' (in English) : http://mondediplo.com/2002/08/10venezuela The Washington Post seems to have found one of the reasons for collaborating http://www.consortiumnews.com/2001/050701a.html But, what about your own country ? THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST !
