Jared Israel and friends at the Emporers Clothes website are against US military interventions, but have the unfortunate habit of apologizing for Serbian war crimes.

What could be more serious than whether Yugoslavia has committed serious crimes of war? What could be more serious then whether you(Jared)have, in fact, publicly lied with the effect of discouraging action by antiwar activists?

please send my message along ( including Noam) because I am not subbed to all of these lists. I don´t know what your intentions are. I am puzzled. What Chomsky is saying, and what I am saying and what I have been saying for ten years, is that you
cannot build antiwar movement on the category of support but only on the concept of resistance. Our web organization, Resistance, is built exactly on this fundament. You are not helping Serbian civilians, if you are intending to do so, as I hope, by supporting this little dictator. Oppose American interventionism, if you want to help us! Opposing interventionism and blatant imperialism is a moment coherent enough for building worldwide antiwar movement. Your continuing defense of Milosevic, Hussein, Quadafi etc isn´t helpful, it is harmful, misleading and it creates confusion amongst anti war movement.
You want to attack global power structures and their politic towards my country from an angle of supposed Milosevic purity, which is both, a looser approach and a false assumption.
It seems to me that international leftist antiwar camp is divided between
two "fractions": that support to suffering civilians must be in the same time support for their leaders, and the other, according to which support for suffering civilians must be based on resistance and opposition to militarism and imperialism per se, without idolizing the leaders. Frankly I don´t understand your stubbornness. But obviously you are not lonely in this
opinion and that´s why I am writing back to you. I think that strategy of people like you, Remsy Clark and others from this camp is dangerous. I think that this strategy prevents making of strong antiwar movement.
Only a consistent opposition towards *imperialism* and not idolization of
people who are using superbly the situation people are in, only this kind of opposition could be fruitful. Leave americanist NGO´s and Sorosh to us to fight with them: we are not that passive. Belgrade Libertarian Group is doing exactly this. With much success. If you want to be of some help, please concentrate on "opposition", rather than to "support", and avoid this peculiar attacks on people who have confirmed their loyalty to the ideas of truth, humanism, anti-imperialism long ago. Work with them instead. This is a friendly mail. Please, do accept it as such. I am just suggesting a change in perception and strategy of examining Yugoslav, Latin American,
Iraqi situation. You´ll have to admit that your strategy of supporting dictators and disregarding the facts hasn´t been very productive insofar.
Perhaps it is time for some serious reconsideration´s.

yugoslavia in l985--not much, but three months more than Jared.
Jared Israel is the former head of Boston Progressive Labor party, expelled at the end of the l970s for autocratic ways and worse. I knew him well when I was an undergraduate, and believe me, he was no feminist. Het interesseert me niks wat meneer meyers doet, of wie dan ook, zolang ze geen leugens verspreiden in nieuwsgroepen en indymedia over flut conspiricyverhalen, dictators en seriemoordenaars verdedigen in Den Haag. Heb je je ooit afgevraagd of Milosevic misschien toch schuldig is aan de 7000 dode moslims, nee natuurlijk, de nederlanders hebben het gedaan.

Lees het vehaal eens over Yoegoslavie, over hoe de macht van de werkers gebroken werdt, daarna onstonden de etnische conflicten tussen mensen die altijd vreedzaam samen geleefd hadden, en bedenk dan eens hoe ene Pim Fortuyn de vakbonden buiten spel wilde zetten, hoeveel overeenkomsten er zijn......een absolute aanrader

Lieve lieve schat. Als je iets zegt, zorg dan dat het op feiten gebaseerd is. Het conflict tussen de verschillende volkeren in Joegoslavië gaat heel ver terug. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan kwam in WO2, toen de facistische Ustasja uit Kroatië vocht tegen de Servische Partizanen.
Het is van de zotte om Duitsland en de VS het uiteenvallen van Joegoslavië te verwijten. Het uiteenvallen van Joegoslavië is/was het gevolg van sterke onderlinge tegenstellingen tussen de bevolkingsgroepen in Joegoslavië. Het uiteenvallen van Joegoslavië was ook onder Tito slechts een kwestie van tijd. Milosevic of het communisme ergens van willen vrijpleiten, of Amerika ergens de schuld van willen geven, kan alleen gebeuren op basis van feiten. En die feiten ontbreken hier. Joegoslavië is al vanaf het begin in 1918 een kruidvat geweest, en het heeft nog tot 1990 geduurd voordat het kruidvat plofte. Dat het nog zo lang geduurd heeft was meer geluk dan wijsheid.
En het is een illusie dat Joegoslavië ´tot de komst van het imperialiSSme´ vredig is geweest. Want dat is niet zo. Joegoslavië heeft altijd interne spanningen gehad. Altijd.

De betrokkenheid van de NATO is hier nu niet ter discussie,

It is sad to see again smart people like Professor Chossudovsky (emperors-clothing)fall into the same trap into which "the useful idiots" of Stalinism fell into in the 1930´s.
The dislike of capitalism did not morally allow one to defend mass slaughter of people and Stalin´s extermination policies. Similarly, the critique of the last year´s US aggression against Yugoslavia does not mean that one must subscribe to the policies of Mr. Milosevic.
Most people in Serbia today are both anti-NATO and anti-Milosevic, including most famously Mr. Kostinica who just won the election. Regretably, many people in the West--on both sides of the political spectrum--have trouble understanding that one can be against both. In that simplistic view of the world, Prof. Chossudovsky rejoins other luminaries such
as Mrs. Albright.
Moreover, it is difficult for me to see on what grounds the left can defend somebody like Mr. Milosevic. (At least, you could argue that Stalin _did_ have a certain ideologically coherant program: industrialization, transfer of labor from agriculture to industry, internationalism until the early 1950´s when he turned anti-Semitic).
But Milosevic has none of that. Ideologically, his is a xenophobic government as far removed from internationalism, which is, of course, a key part of all leftist ideology, as possible. Under its governments thousands of workers have gone with miserable wages unpaid for months.
Corruption, police intimidation and brutality, directed toward the poorest segments of the population, are rife and everyday part of life. Some one hundred richest families, Milosevic´s political cronies, control probably about one-half of the economy. In a country where the average wage is less than $100, Mr. Milosevic´s son has openly admitted, in a newspaper interview, to have crashed 15 cars,
ranging from BMWs to Ferraris. Is this a leftist government?
Prof. Chossudovsky, probably relying on Western sources alone, seems blissfullly unaware that under Milosevic´s privatization, like in a feudal system, his key supporters were rewarded with ownership of diffferent companies,
nay whole sectors of the economy. One (Mr. Sainovic, the spokesman of his party) owns the copper production; another (Mr. Tomic, the head of the Serbia´s parliament) owns several mineral water companies; yet another owns the largest furniture plant. Does Prof. Chossudovsky find that this feudal arrangement(political capitalism to use Max Weber´s terminology) combined with a police force of 100,000 men on 8 million people, and a xenophobic nationalism represents the high ideals of the left?

Slachtpartijen, uitwijzingen, verkrachtingen, massale uittochten... Het Kosovaars Bevrijdingsleger UCK organiseert een terreurbewind in Kosovo, gericht tegen Serviërs, zigeuners en andere groepen. De Navo en de VN sluiten de ogen. Een beleid van etnische zuivering? Een rapport van de Canadese professor economie Michel Chossudovsky lijkt dit te beamen. Uittreksels van zijn rapport. [1]
Het Hoogcommissariaat voor Vluchtelingen van de Verenigde Naties (UNHCR) bevestigde dat "meer dan 164.000 Serviërs Kosovo hebben verlaten in de eerste zeven weken nadat... de door de Navo geleide Kosovo-macht (KFOR) de provincie binnentrok... Het gevolg was een golf van brandstichtingen en plunderingen in Servische en zigeunerhuizen doorheen Kosovo. De Serviërs en zigeuners die in Kosovo zijn gebleven, werden herhaaldelijk mishandeld, geïntimideerd of zwaar afgetuigd. Ernstiger nog is het hoge aantal moorden en ontvoeringen van Serviërs sinds middenjuni. Een voorbeeld daarvan is de nog recente slachtpartij op Servische boeren eind juli." [2]
Servische huizen en bedrijven werden in beslag genomen, geplunderd of in brand gestoken. Serviërs werden in elkaar geslagen, verkracht en vermoord. Het Kosovaars Bevrijdingsleger UCK ontvoerde en vermoordde talloze technici en intellectuelen: "Private en openbare eigendommen worden belaagd, huiseigenaars worden met geweld massaal verdreven, huizen en dorpen worden in brand gestoken, culturele en religieuze monumenten worden vernield. Een bijzonder ernstig voorbeeld zijn de vernielingen in het hospitaal van Pristina, de mishandeling en verdrijving van de directie, artsen en medische staf." [3]
Er zijn ook gevallen van etnische zuivering tegen de Roma, de zigeuners. Die groep telde voor het conflict nog 150.000 mensen in Kosovo. Een groot deel van hen zijn intussen gevlucht richting Montenegro en Servië. Het UCK beveelt de systematische plundering en vernieling van Romahuizen: "Alle huizen en nederzettingen, zoals de 2.500 woningen in de residentiële wijk ´Mahala´ in Kosovska Mitrovica, zijn geplunderd en afgebrand." [4]
UÇK-terreur verzwegen
De moordpartijen op Serviërs, Roma (zigeuners) en andere etnische groepen werden bevolen door de militaire leiding van het UCK. De publieke opinie wordt over dit alles misleid. In hun berichtgeving gaan de westerse media steeds vlotjes over de rol van het UCK in de slachtpartijen en over de banden tussen UCK en de georganiseerde misdaad.
De slachtpartijen worden bijna nooit voorgesteld als het resultaat van ´doelgerichte beslissingen´ van de UCK-leiding. Maar de feiten (en de geschiedenis van het UCK) maken duidelijk dat deze wreedheden wel degelijk deel zijn van een ´etnische zuivering´ tegen de Servische bevolking maar ook tegen de Roma (de zigeuners), de Montenegrijnen, de Gorani en de Turken.
Maar er is meer. Terwijl de Navo de zelfverklaarde voorlopige UCK-regering door haar stilzwijgen bevestigde, beschermde de KFOR, de internationale veiligheidsmacht in Kosovo, UCK-leiders die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de wreedheden. Maar zowel de Navo als de VN doen alsof hun neus bloedt. Uno-verantwoordelijke voor Kosovo, Bernard Kouchner en KFOR-verantwoordelijke Mike Jackson werken intussen dagelijks samen met de twee topmannen van het UCK: Hashim Thaci en Agim Ceku.
Sinds de Navo-bezetting zijn de wettelijke regels helemaal op hun kop gezet. Criminelen en terroristen worden nu verantwoordelijk voor de ordehandhaving. UCK-troepen, die al verscheidene politiebureaus in handen hebben gekregen, zullen uiteindelijk een 4.000 man sterke civiele politiemacht vormen die ´burgers moet beschermen´. Die politiemacht zal, onder VN-leiding, opgeleid worden door buitenlandse politieofficieren.

Michel Chossudovsky, -het verbaast me dat je alle talen van de wereld spreekt- ben ik even bezorgd als jou over de anarchie die is ontstaan in Kososvo, maar dat neemt niet weg dat ik blij ben dat dictator Slobo is uitgeleverd aan Den Haag. Je moest eens weten welk een vreugdedans ik heb gemaakt toen ik vernam dat hij onderweg was.
Nu is Mladic aan de beurt.......wacht maar af, alle afleidingsmanouveres van jullie ten spijt, ze zullen nooit meer buiten de gevangenis lopen, en als ze westerse figuren als Solana en de UCK/KLA meenemen in hun gevolg, des te beter. Hier hebben we een gemeenschappelijk belang, "but true friends stap you in the front"
