Argentine Blames IMF for Crisis There are daily protests against everything from deepening poverty to rising unemployment to rules keeping a hostile public´s savings hostage in the banks to avoid the total collapse of the financial system. Teachers went on strike across the country Thursday to demand back pay, while one angry depositor in the seaside resort of Mar del Plata south of Buenos Aires was tied to a cross outside a bank in a mock crucifixion to protest against the savings freeze. With half of the population now living in poverty -- defined by the ability to pay for essential goods and services like food and rent -- patience is wearing thin with Duhalde, who predicts that the IMF, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank will send aid within a month. "We want Duhalde to go," said one protester in front of Duhalde´s private suburban home, as demonstrators pelted it with vegetables. |
