Portugal:Violent police attack on anti-capitalist protesters

The anti-capitalist anarchist demonstration held in Setúbal on 1st of May ended with an incredible violent reaction of the portuguese police. An unknown amount of people got woonded by rubber and possibly real bullets.

After the demonstration reached it's final destination the protestors stayed around to rest and socialize. Soon after there appeared a van that dropped of a group of policemen who assaulted a car that had participated in the protest. The atmosphere turned to be aggressive. Rubber bullets where fired that injured some people. Also (real) gun shots where heard and in portuguese reports on indymedia is written that one person was hit by real bullets in both knees. Witnesses gathered photos and capsules of real bullets. The protester that was woonded in the knees was taken by the police (to hospital?). Several other people were injured either by the use of batons or by the use of tear gas and rubber bullets at close range. The reports mention that people were persecuted on the run and were shot at with rubber bullets that hit some of the demonstrators in the neck, in the back and the abdomen. The police also fired on empty bottles so that shrapnel reached the protesters.

It is worth mentioning the joint collaboration of the population that gave shelter and helped some of the seriously injured.

About 200 people from various parts of Portugal joined the 1 may demonstration in Setubal. They shouted slogans and carried flags and banners of anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian messages [translated]: "the people united, do not need a party, " self-organization”, " organized people do not need the State ", " Sabotage ... wildcat strike! " At the moment there is no information on how many people got hurt, there is little documentation available on this violent attack of the police and the mainstream media is completely focused on the death of Osama Bin Laden....
