Nuon zwicht voor anti-kolen campagne

Nuon stopt met de bouw van een centrale voor kolen en biomassa in de Eemshaven. Zeven milieuorganisaties zien in ruil af van hun bezwaarprocedures tegen de bouw van de kolencentrale.

De te bouwen energiecentrale van Nuon in de Eemshaven zal tot tenminste 2020 alleen op aardgas draaien. Dat heeft het energieconcern afgesproken in een opmerkelijke deal met zeven milieuorganisaties. Die zien in ruil daarvoor af van hun bezwaarprocedures tegen de nieuwbouw. Daardoor kan de centrale gewoon volgens planning in 2012 worden opgestart.

Zelf noemt Nuon de hoge wereldmarktprijzen van kolen en biomassa als belangrijkste reden om deze grondstoffen voorlopig niet te verstoken in de Eemshaven. Bovendien is de CO2-uitstoot van de nieuwe Magnum-centrale een probleem, nu de vrijkomende verbrandingsgassen niet mogen worden opgeslagen in de bodem.

Volgens de milieuorganisaties, met Greenpeace en de Waddenvereniging voorop, vloeit de deal echter ook voort uit hun felle verzet tegen de plannen. Zij voeren al jaren actie tegen de plannen van zowel Nuon als RWE/Essent voor kolencentrales in de Eemshaven. Dat laatste Nederlands/Duitse energieconcern zet zijn plannen wel door.

Na de deal met Nuon zetten de milieuorganisaties de procedures tegen RWE/Essent door. Komende maandag buigt de Raad van State zich over de bezwaarschriften die zij hebben ingediend tegen de milieuwet-vergunning voor de nieuwe centrale van het energieconcern. Greenpeace roept burgers op om hun contract het RWE/Essent op te zeggen.
