A donation from the daughter of billionaire investor Warren Buffett will allow the University of Nebraska to create a research institute focused on improving early childhood education, especially for low-income kids.
University officials didn't disclose the amount of the gift Monday from Susie Buffett, of Omaha, but they said the university would more than match the gift.
Warren Buffett has pledged to give the bulk of his fortune to charity over time. Most of it is going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but Buffett also pledged sizeable donations to his own foundation and the three foundations run by his children.
Susie Buffett said she has focused much of her giving on early childhood programs to ensure that all kids have a chance to succeed. Research has shown that low-income students often start school less prepared than their peers from middle-class and affluent families, and then many low-income students struggle to catch up.
"Science and common sense tell us that children are born learning," Buffett said. "So investing in the early years makes sense in order to create a more level playing field for all our children."
University President J.B. Milliken said the new Buffett Early Childhood Institute will complement the work of other early childhood centers around the country. It will promote the development and success of children from birth to 8, especially those from poor homes or and those who have developmental, learning or behavioral problems.
"We must do more to ensure our youngest children especially those who are at risk have equal opportunities for health, happiness and success," Milliken said.
Susie Buffett's Sherwood Foundation support early childhood initiatives, such as Educare Centers for low-income families. Her donation to the university will help pay for opening several new Educare Centers in Nebraska. Susie Buffett also serves on the board of Girls Incorporated, a national nonprofit organization that offers recreational and educational programs to girls.
Buffett's father accumulated his fortune while running and building Omaha-based conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway.
Warren Buffett and his first wife established the foundations for their children in the late 1990s. In 2006, he announced plans to give each of his children's foundations roughly $1 billion worth of Class B Berkshire stock over time.
