Benefiet for the arrested on General Strike Barcelona 29 Sept 2010 Date: Saturday 12 Februari, begins at 20:00 Location: Autonoom Centrum Amsterdam Barkoenin Info, Music and more... Huelga General! Absolution for the arrested in the General Strike! Benefit with music, info and more. Starts 20:00 The general strike of 29 September 2010, convened by major unions and, in Catalonia, also driven by alternative unions, neighborhood councils and social movements, expresses the unease caused by the current economic crisis. The strike was called against the Labor Reform approved by the Government, to stop all the social cuts that the Administration intended to solve a problem caused mainly by the greed of the financial system. That day, thousands of people went out on the street, not just union members, but many other sectors affected both by the crisis and the measures that intend to use this crisis in favor of business and banking. Precarious workers, unemployed, pensioners, scholars, students, migrant domestic workers... went out to fight and revitalize a society that seemed asleep by the narcotic speech "there is nothing to do." That day, the streets were alive again against the capitalist logic that commercialized our lives. That day opened a path for those who were unable to strike because of their employers repression, of not having papers, not having a job or not having the ability to organize collectively. The strike was social, and should be valued positively: we don't want a society jailed by crisis and fear, we want wealth to be redistributed in a fair, equitable and happy way. The Interior Ministry didn't understand it this way, nor the Catalan Police which indiscriminately repressed with violence the social struggles of that day. In Barcelona, the protests ended with fifty arrests, with more people being arrested in other cities like Girona, Manresa, Mataró, Sabadell and Cornellà. Picketers, demonstrators and protesters handing out flyers got detained as well. Hundreds of people suffered assaults and physical mistreatment by police. That was the response of the State: not listening, not rectifyng the social cuts, don't stopping the Labor Reform, don't understanding the cause of discomfort. Active repression handcuffed, beated up, kidnaped, prosecuted and violated. They were not alone in that task: most of the media created the figure of the "antisistema" to criminalize the protests, silencing the reasons of the strike and trying to isolate solidarity towards the repressed. "The range of alternatives and proposals from these social movements are ignored, hidden, subverted and never considered as ways to transform and give new options for life in society. Focusing on certain episodes of violence, without even listening to the answers and the voice of the social movements who are being attacked, means to directly criminalize them. Means to build an scapegoat and divert citizen's attention from real conflicts in which we are immersed more than ever in our society: unemployment, poverty and social exclusion, rising inequality between groups, the constant cutting of social rights, the weakening of the claims of the organized labor movement, racism and xenophobia, political corruption and its impunity, violence against women, the harshness and severity of criminal control against the most vulnerable, the increasing of the rate of arrests, detentions, fines... " Fragment fro "Let's say enough to the criminalization of social movements." Manifesto of university teachers. We should not leave alone those arrested that day. Because the 29-S seized all the streets to defend a future beyond the crisis. We stand in solidarity with the defendants of the general strike!
