Special guest at these meetings is Magdiel Carrion. Magdiel is a respected peasant leader of the indigenous movement and president of the National Coordination of Communities Affected by Mining (CONACAMI), one of the most criminalized organisations in Peru. poster Say no to mining Logo of the campaign for 'free mining zones' Large-scale mining and oil extraction by transnational companies are expanding enormously under the current neo-liberal government in Peru. Many of these extraction projects have had a negative impact on local communities and the environment and have generated social, economical and political conflicts. In two open meetings, the current practices of multinational mining and oil corporations in Peru will be debated and their consequences analyzed. Additionally we will discuss several local alternatives and what we can do to support them. Special guest at these debates is Magdiel Carrion, who, as a farmer leader, has extensive experience with resistance of local indigenous communities against mining extraction in Peru, and who has recently been elected as the new president of the National Coordination of Communities Affected by Mining (CONACAMI).
