[am*dam] nachtelijke perikelen 3rde oosterparkstraat
Naftali Botwin - 25.08.2010 21:54

kapsel krijgen!

Another version of events
fritz - 26.08.2010 15:25

Last night's events at Tweede Oosterparkstraat 322
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Alarm was called around 12.30am. This was by no means a scheduled or "proper" eviction.

The first to arrive found two plainclothes police-officers attempting to force the door with a crowbar, while two uniformed officers stood behind them.

He told them they had to stop, and asked what was going on. They said they needed to get inside because there were reports of a break-in. He said that friends of his lived there and that there was no break-in. This was of course not true: the break-in attempt was happening at that very moment, except that the ones breaking in were plain-clothes police officers.

He asked them to identify themselves, which they did by flashing some kind of badge in his face, while simultaneously shining a flashlight in his eye. This is a useful trick, we now know.

He told them that the squatters had huisvrede.

or in other words, that the officers were making a gigantic mistake. He could have added that they should learn some basic concepts before smashing people's doors, but didn't.

The other two officers retrieved a two-person battering ram from their vehicle, and began ramming the door. One or two other respondents to the alarm arrived at this point, and all began screaming at the officers to stop and that they were acting illegally. They approached the door but were pushed back by the officers, who ordered them away. They continued screaming that this was illegal. Lights began to go on in the bedroom windows of various neighbors; apparently the idea that the police can act illegally is interesting enough to make the residents of the Oosterparkbuurt lie awake in bed or peer out the window, but not enough to make them come down and stand up for their neighbors in the face of arbitrary police violence.

They gave the door around 6 heavy blows with the ram; luckily, it was well-barricaded and survived this. By now the street was full of police cars, officers, and respondents to the alarm. The officers began violently clearing the street, shouting, Move or else we'll get violent. Some people pointed out, You are already being violent; and, Don't you feel ashamed carrying out such violence when the possibilty exists that you might be wrong? and, Can you admit for a minute that you might be wrong?

Two of the officers couldn't make eye contact with us at this point, and shuffled about restlessly in the police line, clearly undergoing some kind of inner tension at the desire to act like a human being, and the demands of their mercenary profession. Those demands won the day, and they resumed shouting at us and pushing us away.

They made the amazing claim that they had to go inside and make sure that the house was empty. We told them that it was *not* empty -- people lived there -- and that when it was squatted, their own colleagues had confirmed its emptiness. Couldn't they just take a moment to call back to the mothership and *ask* ?

All efforts at discussion were rebuffed, even by the chef van dienst; she said that there was nothing to discuss: they wanted to get inside the building, and they were going to be allowed in or force the door. Trying to discuss with mercenaries on the job is certainly an interesting (and extremely frustrating) endeavour.

There was now quite a stand-off, as more and more squatters started arriving, and the police were nervous about a possible escalation. They finally agreed to allow two woordvoerders from the squatters to discuss with the chef. What they discussed was private, but the woordvoerders managed to deescalate the situation (good job, guys) and the police ended up convinced that there was, after all, no break-in (No shit, Einstein!)

In the end, they drove off, without giving any further explanation of the senseless aggression to the door, their intimidation of the legitimate residents, their pushing and threatening of the people who showed amazing patience trying to explain to them that they were making a gigantic mistake, or their inhuman "no-discussion unless we get our way" attitude. It seems that the vocabulary of Amsterdam's police could be usefully enlarged by two entries: "Huisvrede", and "Het spijt mij." *

That the police, under orders from their higher-ups, act arbitrarily and illegally is of course no surprise (remember Citex? or that house in the North where they let LeBelle's thugs beat up some squatters while they guarded the street?) And of course no one expects them to know the word "sorry"; but what is still missing is an explanation of just what the hell happened last night. The break-in story is about as plausible as the explanation that they thought that goblins and trolls were gathering in the basement, casting spells to disrupt important football matches and other sacred things.

Further light on the topic is very appreciated.

-Fritz

[Update to this story: there were reports that henchmen from Rochdale attacked a squat in the South this morning, way ahead of the scheduled eviction -- anyone have info on this?]

Klasse standgehouden in ieder geval. Die politie wordt steeds gekker.
