Vrijdag: Komt allen Albert Heijn bezoeken met Reverend Billy
Aanstaande vrijdag 6 augustus staat in de VS Ahold centraal in de tour van de 'tomatenplukkers' van de Coalition of Imokalee Workers. Ze doen dan met hun rijdend "museum van de moderne slavernij" Quincy, Massachusetts, de zetel van Aholds hoofdkantoor in de VS aan. Uit solidariteit en om hun eisen kracht bij te zetten, doen wij hetzelfde in Amsterdam, waarbij we begeleid zullen worden door Reverend Billy en Savitri D van de Church of Stop Shopping.
Ahold's dochterbedrijven bleken in te kopen bij bedrijven die besmet zijn geraakt bij een grote slavernijzaak. De CIW eist van Ahold dat ze werk maakt van de aanpak van uitbuiting bij haar toeleveranciers. De CIW wil dat Ahold een eerlijke prijs gaat betalen voor de tomaten die het inkoopt, zodat de arbeiders die de tomaten plukken er van kunnen leven. En ze eisen een stem voor de landarbeiders in het controlesysteem op de arbeidsomstandigheden, om slavernij en ander misbruik voortaan te voorkomen.
Enkele jaren geleden slaagde de CIW er na jaren van demonstreren en actievoeren in om een eerste grote inkoper, fastfoodketen Taco Bell, te dwingen om een hogere te betalen voor haar tomaten. Sindsdien zijn meer grote bedrijven omgegaan. Ahold (dat in de VS verschillende winkelketens bezit, waaronder Stop&Shop, Martin's en Giant) weigert tot nu toe een akkoord met de tomatenplukkers te ondertekenen.
Het wereldwijde hoofdkantoor van Ahold zit in Amsterdam aan de (hoe verzinnen ze het) Piet Hein Kade. Daarom willen we op dezelfde dag uit solidariteit met de CIW-actie ook daar een boodschap heenbrengen. We roepen iedereen op om daaraan mee te doen.
Het gebeuren staat onder leiding van Reverend Billy, de inmiddels beroemde dominee van de Church of Stop Shopping die even op bezoek is in Nederland. Hij zal de ceremonie leiden die even swingend als luidruchtig dreigt te worden. Neem dus uw koorleden en eventueel muziekinstrumenten mee. De dresscode is AH-blauw.
Het evenement zal om 14.30 stipt beginnen op de trappen voor AH Food Plaza achter de Dam in Amsterdam (NZ Voorburgwal 226). Na een eerste ceremonie aldaar, zullen we in optocht via CS naar de Piet Heinkade 167 trekken, alwaar nieuwe uitgevoerd zullen worden, en verwacht wordt dat AH met een antwoord komt op de eisen van de CIW.

In het Nederlandse verhaaltje was in de derde allinea het woordje 'prijs' ontsnapt (de juiste zin luidt: Enkele jaren geleden slaagde de CIW er na jaren van demonstreren en actievoeren in om een eerste grote inkoper, fastfoodketen Taco Bell, te dwingen om een hogere te betalen voor haar tomaten.) Hierbij de Engelse vertaling van de oproep, voor het geval je door zou willen sturen naar 'expats':

Next Friday August 6 Ahold will be the focus of the tour of the 'tomato pickers' of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. They will go with their mobile "Museum of Modern Slavery" to the headquarters of Ahold in the US in Quincy Massachusetts. In solidarity and to support their demands, we will do the same in Amsterdam and we will be accompanied by Reverend Billy and Savitri D of the Church of Stop Shopping.
Ahold's subsidiaries were found to be purchasing tomatoes from companies tainted in a recent huge scandal of modern slavery. CIW demands from Ahold that they work on eradicating exploitation at their supplier level. CIW wants Ahold to pay an honest price for the tomatoes they buy, so that the workers earn a decent wage. Another demand is that the workers have a say in the monitoring system of the labor conditions, thus preventing slavery and other abuses in the future.
A few years ago the CIW succeeded, after years of demonstrating and actions, to force a big purchaser, fast food chain Taco Bell, to pay a premium price for their tomatoes. Since then several large companies went along. Ahold (who owns several companies in the US, amongst them Stop&Shop, Martin's and Giant) refuses to sign an agreement with the tomato pickers.
The global head office of Ahold is located in Amsterdam at the (how coincidental is that) Piet Hein Kade. Therefore we want to deliver a message there in solidarity with the action of the CIW. We invite everybody to join us.
The event will be led by and Savitri D and Reverend Billy, famous minister of the Church of Stop Shopping, who happens to be in the Netherlands. He will lead a ceremony that could become as swinging as it is loud. So please take your fellow choir members and musical instruments with you. Dress code is AH-bluish.
The event will start at precisely 14.30 hours on the steps of AH Food Plaza behind the Dam in Amsterdam (NZ Voorburgwal 226). After a first ceremony there, we will walk in procession towards the Piet Heinkade 167, where new skits will be acted and we expect an answer of AH.

Daarna trok de groep van enkele tientallen mensen naar het Ahold-kantoor aan de Piet Heinkade, alwaar nog meer donderpreken werden gehouden en het heilige tomatensap uit Immokalee werd toegediend aan nieuwe gelovigen (die dus geloven dat multinationals verslagen kunnen worden).

This afternoon, Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping from New York made an appearance at the Albert Heijn Food Plaza in Amsterdam, calling on Ahold to take measures against the exploitation of tomato pickers in Florida. The action was staged in support of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (ciw-online.org/), which was simultaneously holding an action at Ahold’s US headquarters.

6 augustus 2010 – Reverend Billy en Savitri D van de Church of Stop Shopping preken tegen de uitbuiting van tomatenplukkers in Florida.
Nederlandse actievoerders verzamelden voor een Albert Heijn supermarkt in het centrum van Amsterdam voor een tomatenuitdrijving door ceremonie leider Reverend Billy van de Church of Stop Shopping “Evil does exist. Ahold is the devil”. Met deze ludieke actie vragen ze aan Ahold, een supermarkt gigant met wereldwijd elf ketens waaronder de Nederlandse Albert Heijn, dat het zijn verantwoordelijkheid neemt voor de uitbuiting van toeleveranciers van tomaten in de Verenigde Staten. Even later trok de groep naar het hoofdkantoor van Ahold, waar een woordvoerder van de concern hen met loze beloften probeerde te bedaren.
